Marine Biology and Biological Oceanography
One of the most rewarding and passionate majors a student can enroll in is marine biology. Often touted as a major that requires a real love of marine life, students must enjoy science, math and sea life. The work isn’t always steady, but being a marine biologist is a lifestyle.
A person doesn’t have to graduate with a degree in marine biology to be a marine biologist. Students can major in biology, zoology, ecology or even chemistry.
Marine biologists have a love of the ocean and the wildlife within it. A typical day can involve investigating a species, tracking whales, battling diseases, marine clean up or oil spill disaster relief. No two days are the same and most marine biologists are heavily involved in assessing the impact of humans on marine life.
The average salary of a marine biologist ranges from $33,000 to $98,000, depending on the position, years of experience and length of education.
