Get paid to learn and network as a federal intern.
Approximately 400 student interns, majoring in a variety of fields, are needed for the Future Leaders Public Service Internship programs. The first internship program is set to begin in May 2022 with a group of 200 interns. Applications for the internship this May are due by January 31, 2022. The second internship is planned for the summer of 2023 with another 200 in the cohort. This federal agency internship program is looking to both current college students and graduate students to work with the United States Departments of Commerce and Transportation. Interns selected into this program would work approximately three months in the Washington D.C. area and earn a $4,000 stipend per student intern.

Available to: College Sophomores through Graduate Students, Years 1-5
Award Amount: $4,000
This civil-service program has five career tracks, including mission support, government contracting and acquisitions, STEM and innovation, public policy and administration, and Liberal Arts. These internships are available to current college students and grad students with the following degrees/focus areas:
  • Business
  • Finance
  • Human Resources
  • Information Technology
  • Science
  • Technology
  • Engineering
  • Mathematics
  • Public Policy and Administration
  • Communications
  • Social Sciences
  • Humanities
  • In addition to gaining immeasurable hands-on learning experiences, interns can expect to learn and benefit from an orientation event, numerous professional development sessions and networking events.

    Future Leaders in Public Service Internship Program Eligibility

    To qualify for this federal internship program, students must be:
  • A U.S. citizen.
  • Enrolled as at least a sophomore at an accredited college or university.
  • Able to demonstrate superior academic achievement.
  • Have 3.0, minimum GPA.
  • According to Government Executive, the federal internship program has been launched because of two groups. Schmidt Futures, founded by Eric and Wendy Schmidt, has provided financial support for the program. The Partnership for Public Service, a non-profit organization, is managing The Future Leaders in Public Service Internship Program.
