Like so many other facets of our life, Coronavirus has turned the entire
internship experience on its head. This summer, thousands of college students would have migrated to different cities, different apartments, or different companies to learn about a particular career or company while contributing to their product, strategy and development. Instead, many internship experiences were cancelled or postponed.
However, some companies – and college students – found a way to have the internship experience despite the global pandemic.

Coronavirus has introduced us to new way of “doing life,” and the virtual internship is just one of the by-products of our new, yet temporary, circumstances. Through the remote internship experience, students can engage with and contribute to a company while building on their own experience and skill set from the comfort of their own home. Though it is not the imagined or hoped for experience, it’s still life-changing, nonetheless.
The best part? Online internships are becoming increasingly popular. Take a look at some of the Remote Internships we’ve found right here on Fastweb.

What will my Remote Internship look like?
CNN provided an inside look at the remote internship programs of three large, U.S. companies: PepsiCo, Dell and MassMutual. While the internship experience looks drastically different at these three companies, they have all gone above and beyond to ensure that remote interns are learning and engaging with other full-time remote workers, including Vice Presidents and CEOs.
Like many other internship experiences this summer, these companies have shortened the length of time for the summer internship. MassMututal shortened their program from 11 weeks to nine weeks, and PepsiCo opted for six weeks instead of their typical 10 weeks.
Still, interns have been plugged in immediately to the workload and the community. MassMutual hosted a virtual dance party on orientation day and then jumped into team meetings afterwards. Many of the interns are ordering food for lunch and meeting over Zoom to network, chat about projects and build lasting friendships.
During a typical summer internship experience, interns may hear from VIPs at the company once or twice; however, given the fact that these CEOs and COOs are working remotely as well, there is more flexibility for them to engage with interns through lunch Zoom calls, panel discussions and more.
Through the virtual internship experience, MassMutual has paired all interns with a manager, intern coordinator and a buddy to help them navigate this summer. Essentially, each intern has three different people within the company that they can reach out to at any given time for clarification, help and guidance. Dell told
CNN that they had more mentors volunteer to help interns than ever before. In fact, they had to turn people away.
Yes, the internship experience looks a lot different this year, but students are still getting the same benefits – if not more. Check out
