Seasonal hiring dipped in 2018 and it is predicted that it will “remain stagnant” or fall slightly in 2019, according to Challenger, Gray & Christmas, Inc.
, a global outplacement and executive coaching firm. The firm reports they’ve counted up about 241,000 seasonal jobs on the market right now.
“The shift to online shopping in Retail means traditional Retailers will likely not hire the numbers they once did. However, these holiday jobs seem to be appearing in Transportation and Warehousing, as Retailers rely more and more on fulfillment centers,” said Andrew Challenger, Vice President of Challenger, Gray & Christmas, Inc. in a press release.

Estimated Seasonal Hires: 8,000
This year, 1-800-FLOWERS.COM, Inc. will nearly quadruple its workforce by announcing plans to hire about 8,000 seasonal employees for the 2019 holiday season.
According to their press release
, “Perks such as gift card drawings and raffles, product giveaways, referral bonuses and employee discounts are designed to attract highly-motivated, enthusiastic associates.”

Estimated Seasonal Hires: 90,000
According to their website, this year “Kohl’s will host its first-ever national hiring event on Saturday, October 5. This will take place at all stores and e-commerce fulfillment centers nationwide with the intent to hire 5,000 seasonal associates in one day.” Bypass complicated human resources departments: Interested job applicants are able to interview for local positions and potentially get hired on the spot.

7,000 associates out of Kohl’s 90,000 seasonal hiring total will staff a “135-store omni power center pilot supporting increased digital demand fulfilled by stores during the season. Omni power centers within store locations enhance Kohl’s fulfillment capabilities during peak periods by equipping them with more inventory, technology and process enhancements to allow associates to be more efficient in fulfilling digital orders.”

Estimated Seasonal Hires: 130,000
plans to hire approximately 130,000 team members – 10,000 more than last year. Target stores nationwide offer a minimum starting wage of $13 an hour and flexible scheduling for both long term and temporary employees.
According to a Target press release
approximately 125,000 seasonal positions will be in stores and 8,000 seasonal positions will be at distribution and fulfillment centers. Last year, over 40 percent of Target’s seasonal hires remained working at Target following the holiday season, so whether you're looking for long-term or short-term, Target may be for you!
Also, Target will invest $2 million in a holiday team member appreciation program which is “designed to bring extra holiday joy to its hourly team members and the local communities they serve.” Through the program, members will be selected at random and rewarded with a $250 Target gift card and the opportunity to give a $250 donation to a local charitable organization of their choice.
Target allows applicants to apply in two ways: applying in store at hiring events and applying online.
Target will host two rounds of hiring events this year. The first event will take place from October 11-13, 2019 and the second from November 2-3, 2019. The hiring events will be hosted at all Target stores across the country from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. (local time). According to Target, “the weekend events give candidates the opportunity to meet store leaders, with the potential to interview on the spot and receive a conditional job offer.”

Estimated Seasonal Hires: 100,000
UPS (United Parcel Service) announced plans
to hire 100,000 seasonal employees for both full- and part-time positions.
According to the UPS website, benefits include: “Flexible shifts, full- and part-time positions available at thousands of locations. Additionally, UPS boasts that “Over a third of seasonal hires land permanent jobs at UPS after the holidays.” Plus, UPS is now offering tuition reimbursement at many locations!
