Twitter Chat Recap: #GSSummerSeries with @GetSchooled
Did you miss the #GSSummerSeries Twitter chat with @GetSchooled? We were invited, along with other experts in the field of scholarships, to talk about when to apply for scholarships, how to actually win and what to avoid when searching. Fortunately for you, we’ve crafted this helpful recap of our responses to the #GSSummerSeries Identifying and Applying for Scholarships Twitter chat. Introduce yourself! A little about us: Fastweb works by matching students using information in their completed profile to scholarships from a database of over 1.5 million scholarships worth over $3.4 billion. We not only find scholarships but offer our members information on financial aid, jobs and internships, student life and more. When should students begin applying for scholarships? How many scholarships should they apply for? Anyone who is at least 13 years of age with a valid U.S. address can become a member of Fastweb for free and search for scholarships. We recommend students start the process earlier than later and apply for as many scholarships they can. The more scholarships students apply for, the better their chances of winning! What resources do you recommend for students to use to find scholarships? Fastweb, of course! We’re the premier online resource when it comes to paying for & preparing for school – and it’s completely free. We've been around for over 20 years and have earned a reputation as a leading scholarship search provider. What advice do you have for students to help them win scholarships they are applying for? There are a lot of best practices for your scholarship search to follow. For example, applying weekly and breaking your search into smaller tasks can help the search seem less overwhelming. We recommend students utilize the tools available on our site, such as the profile wizard, regularly to ensure you have the most up-to-date information in your profile. Download our app. It allows you to keep track of your scholarships the go and connect with us via mobile to stay on track with your scholarship search constantly. What type of scholarships should students apply for? We have scholarships for every type of student from the high school freshmen to the returning adult. Students can apply for scholarships based on school year, ethnicity, extracurricular activities and more! Filling out a profile thoroughly AND updating it regularly will ensure you’re matched to the correctly targeted opportunities. Any profile info we ask for pertains to scholarships in our database, by providing us with this information we can rule out any scholarships that students don't qualify for and match them to qualifying scholarships. We love some of the big scholarships out there like Coca-Cola Scholars and Dell Scholars -- but don't shy away from those "small" scholarships worth $500 or more. Those little scholarships can really add up! Can scholarships be used for things other than a student’s education? Some scholarships can be used for education-related expenses, while others specifically go to tuition payments. That’s up to the scholarship provider, not us. Students can find information on specific scholarships on each provider’s website to verify what the funds can be used for. If students need help earning money for other things, Fastweb now has part-time job listings, too! Once logged in, students can find exciting part-time job opportunities based on their profile. How can students verify they are applying to real scholarships? All scholarships on Fastweb are vetted by our research team to ensure they are 100% legitimate. Students should be aware that, on other sites, there are red flags that scholarships are not legitimate. Some red flags that scholarships are not legitimate: scholarships pay you, you don’t pay them. You should never have to pay to take on an opportunity. Students should also never share personal information, like bank account information or social security numbers. We have several helpful articles on how to identify scholarship scams. What other scholarship tips would you like to share? We just want to reiterate that whether you're a high school freshmen or a returning adult we've got scholarships and information to help you find ways to pay for school. Besides providing students with scholarships they actually qualify for, and eliminating the need to scour the web, we also provide advice on financial aid, college admissions, student life and tools such as financial aid calculators and checklists. We’ve prepared the free tools to help students find ways to pay for school, but it’s up to the student to use them to their advantage. Students should log in to their Fastweb account often to see their most recent scholarship matches. We always say that, when it comes to their scholarship search, a student’s mantra should be: apply early and apply often!
