March Madness is Back! Tourney News and Scholarships
It’s March, again. Or has it always been March? Like most milestones and setbacks in 2020 and 2021, memes have perfectly articulated how we’re all feeling, and those that reflect on the fact that it’s been a full year since the start of the pandemic in the U.S. got it just right. Like this Netflix tweet: Fortunately, 2021 is starting to feel a little different…finally. With three vaccines on the market and the number of Americans fully vaccinated against Coronavirus increasing every day, we’re inching our way back to normal.
However, plenty of us are still reeling from the drastic changes to our normal in the past year. In March 2020, college athletes and fans alike were devastated by the decision to cancel March Madness – the first major event to become a victim of #CancelEverything; but this year, there is cause to celebrate because March Madness is back!

March Madness Bounces Back

In October 2020, the NBA successfully finished out its season, quarantining as teams in hotels at Walt Disney World and only leaving to play games and practice. The March Madness tournament will seek to do the same, playing the entire tournament in and around Indianapolis, Indiana.
Two courts will be set up at Lucas Oil Stadium, the home of the Indianapolis Colts. Games will also be played at Bankers Life Fieldhouse, which hosts the Indiana Pacers. Area colleges, like Butler University, Purdue University, and Indiana University, will hold games in addition to the Indiana Farmers Coliseum at the Indiana State Fairgrounds. Teams will be housed on dedicated floors at hotels around Indianapolis and will be completely quarantined with one another, with private dining and transportation to and from games. Spectators will be allowed; however, all stands will be limited to 25%, according to the Indy Star. It is very likely the stands will be filled with family – and those that were willing to pay an exorbitant amount for tickets.
Selection Sunday will take place on March 14, but experts are already hedging their bets on who will be the number one seeds in each conference. Bleacher Report predicts that we’ll see a March Madness appearance from Gonzaga, Michigan, Baylor, and Illinois.
