Applying For Summer Jobs
Now that spring has finally sprung, it’s time to start thinking about your plans for everyone’s favorite season: summer! With it being less than three months away, it’s definitely time to think about how you will make the most of your summer if you haven’t already. So many great opportunities are available when summer arrives, including volunteering, internships, and part-time jobs. Summer jobs in particular are excellent ways to build your resume and really utilize these months off to your benefit! How Do I Begin the Job Search? First and foremost, if you are under 18, make sure to know the employment laws in your state. Once you know where you can and can’t work, consider what kinds of jobs you see yourself in: would you rather work in retail or in the service industry? If you like working with children, maybe working as a camp counselor is the best fit for you! No matter your preferences, don’t limit your options because the market can be competitive for certain jobs. Where Do I Look for Jobs? Once you have a relatively clear idea of jobs you’d like, the next step is find job openings! Make sure to look for jobs that you are relatively qualified for, or have somewhat of a chance of being hired. Look online on social media and job listing sites (such as Fastweb!) to find potential jobs. Ask around your community for opportunities. Check with your school counselor or student center to see if they know of any available jobs.
Did you know that now you can find part-time jobs on Fastweb?
Even better would be to physically visit places to see if they’re hiring. For example, if you’re looking into retail, visit your local Target, TJ Maxx, or the mall perhaps, to name a few stores, and ask around for jobs. Chances are, there will be a few stores hiring. If you do visit a place that’s hiring, you’re already ahead of other applicants. Employers are more likely to remember you if you take the time to come out and show a genuine interest in working at that specific place, giving you an edge over other competitors! How Do I Apply? After you’ve decided on a few jobs you’d like to apply to, it’s time to apply! If you don’t have one already, you’ll need to construct a resume. Send this resume, and, if needed, a cover letter, to potential employers. After submitting your resume, you’ll ideally get called back for an interview. Make sure you’re available and prepared for interviews. Familiarize yourself with common interview questions, as well as any questions pertaining to your specific application. Don’t forget to dress appropriately for your interview! Even though the weather may have only just started to warm up, it’s never too early to start looking, and applying, for jobs! The earlier you start, the better chance you have of lining up a job for the summer! Good luck!
