Reverend Pinckney Scholarship Program
Coastal Community Foundation of South Carolina
The Reverend Pinckney Scholarship Program is open to ambitious, first-generation college students with a demonstrated financial need in Beaufort, Charleston, Colleton, Hampton and Jasper counties. To be considered for this program, you should be committed to attending and graduating from college, be a leader in your school and in the community, serve as a role model, and also be motivated, intellectually curious and ambitious. Selection criteria include, but are not limited to, satisfactory participation in and completion of the College Readiness Program, Pell Grant eligibility, academic performance, and letters of recommendation. Program participants receive a scholarship, ongoing support from a dedicated college success manager, access to free mental health sessions with a licensed therapist, skill-building workshops, college and career preparation, personalized coaching, financial guidance, and an Alumni Network for post-graduation support. Scholars are able to hone their professional skills, prepare themselves financially, pursue exciting educational opportunities, and build a lasting community of peers and mentors. The Pinckney Program was created to honor Rev. Clementa Pinckney, the youngest Black state legislator in South Carolina at the time, elected to the SC House of Representatives at age 23. He was a pastor and respected community leader, passionate about education and social justice. He was also one of the nine worshippers murdered during a racially motivated hate crime at Emanuel AME Church in 2015 in Charleston, SC.
