Many students don't realize that their parents' jobs could impact their scholarship search! This especially holds true for children of military service members. Scholarship providers look to help pay for school, perhaps in part, to thank service members for all they do for the country. Military children and military spouses uniquely qualify for many scholarships. Society of American Military Engineers (SAME), Hampton Roads Post Scholarship

Award Amount: $500-$3,000
The Society of American Military Engineers (SAME), Hampton Roads Post Scholarship is available to full-time undergraduate students who are majoring in STEM fields.You must have a minimum GPA of 3.0 to be considered for this award. The Veterans & Military Family Scholarship is open to students that are current active members of the military, have been honorably discharged, or have an active duty or retired military spouse or parent. You must have a minimum GPA of 3.0 and submit an essay of between 500 to 1000 words on one of the topics listed on the sponsor's website in order to be considered for this award. War Orphans Tuition Assistance

Available to: Ages 16-21
Award Amount: $500
The War Orphans Tuition Assistance is open to children of those service personnel who died while in the military or due to service-connected disabilities, or who are officially listed as missing in action by the U.S. Department of Defense. To qualify, the child must be a resident of New Jersey for at least one year immediately preceding the filing of the application and be between the ages of 16 and 21 at the time of application. Nebraska Waiver of Tuition for Veterans’ Dependents

The Nebraska Waiver of Tuition for Veterans' Dependents is open to any eligible child, spouse, widow or widower attending the University of Nebraska, the state colleges, and community colleges. You must be a resident of Nebraska. In addition, you must have a parent, stepparent or spouse who was a member of the armed forces of the United States and who: (1) Died of a service connected disability; (2) Died subsequent to discharge as a result of injury or illness sustained while in service; (3) Is permanently and totally disabled as a result of military service; (4) Is classified as missing in action or as a prisoner of war during armed hostilities after August 4, 1964. The waiver shall be valid for one degree, diploma, or certificate from a community college and one baccalaureate degree. Applications are submitted to the Department of Veterans' Affairs by contacting the County Veterans Service Officer nearest the applicants place of residence. Liberty Grant

Available to: High School Freshman through Graduate Student, Year 5
Award Amount: $1,000 Provided by the Idaho State Board of Education, the Freedom Scholarship is available to students who are residents of Idaho. You must the child of someone who has been determined by the federal government to have been a prisoner of war, missing in action, or killed in action or died of injuries or wounds sustained in action in southeast Asia, including Korea, or who shall become so hereafter, in any area of armed conflict in which the United States is a party. Samsung American Legion Scholarship Program

Available to: High School Juniors
Award Amount: Varies The Samsung American Legion Scholarship Program is open to high school juniors who are direct descendants of U.S. wartime veterans who served during one or more of the periods of war officially designated as eligibility dates for membership in the American Legion by the United States government. In order to apply, you must have completed an American Legion Boys State or American Legion Auxiliary Girls State Program and plan to attend an accredited U.S. college or university. Selection is based on the following criteria: academic record; involvement in school activities; involvement in community activities and financial need.
