I will be a senior this year and I took my ACT last year!!! Tip of advice try not to study to much or you will cram yourself and forget what you studied. Just study enough to know how the test runs and what they typically ask you to do.

Don't be intimidated. Just work steadily and you'll get through, and know more than you did before. Don't give up either! You can do it.

I'm not studying much. I got a 29 ACT, and I'm pretty happy. I still might retake it to see if I can break into the 30s. Not sure though.

I'm studying for the SATs, using the Barrons '09 for strategey, and then the College Board Book for exams.

Im trying to raise an 1880 to a 2100+ by next year.

I've taken the ACT about 5 times now without studying much, and my last score was a 26. I started off with a 22, so I'm glad that I've improved. I'm thinking about actually studying for it when I take it the next time because my parents want me to get in the 30s, but I want at least a 29.

If I'm going into my senior year and I'm applying for colleges right now, do I still take the ACT/SATs again and keep sending the schools I've applied to my updated scores?

LSchuster2, you should definitely keep taking them and sending them to your colleges. Sometimes one of those scores going up a point or two can be the difference in getting in or not.

Personally, I'm using the WordSmart computer program to study. I think it's helped quite a bit. I haven't taken the ACT again but before the program I got a 29 and a 1190 on the SAT.

What's WordSmart?

I toook the ACT last year (as a junior) and first time got a 27. I still want to improve my score, so I'm taking it again this year... Trying to get up into the 30s. Any tips on Reading and Science sections of the test? (those were my worst.)

I have not taken taken the SAT yet. I am really nervous. Can anybody give me some pointers so I won't freak out while taking the SAT?

When I took the SAT there was an option where you could get your answer sheet and the question booklet from the company after the test and see exactly which questions you missed.  Reviewing that material raised my score about 150 points.  Of course this is only helpful after you've taken it once.

Study enough for the SAT to know how to tackle each section.

For the ACT, most of what people need to work on is timing themselves, and strategies.  You actually aren't supposed to read everything on the Science part.  You're supposed to skim it to know a basic outline of the essay.  For example, if the question is about how viruses spread, you'll recall that was paragraph 3- just something like that.  Timing is so important- you have like 7 sub articles in the last 2 sections, so you have to divide the time into the amount of sections, and then set time apart for skiming and time for answering questions.  The writing section is easy for me- just know the difference between who and whom, when to omit something from a sentence and remember general things, like what the point of the article was.  Math- for many, we took most of the courses several years ago now, so be sure to look over those old topics- it could be the difference between getting a scholarship or not.

I've taken the SAT twice, first I got an 1800, and I just got an 1990. Between the two tests, I did the practice tests on collegeboard and worked on my vocabulary. I also borrowed a SAT book and worked on improving sentences and paragraphs. Preparing for the SAT is mostly on knowing your strengths and weaknesses. For example, I know I'm really good in math, so I didn't study that much on math questions, but on grammer and vocabulary I spent a fair amount of time. The biggest thing is not to stress out before or during the test, just do your best, and you can always retake them:) And the second time taking them is always better, because you know what to expect.

im about to be a junior and i took my ACT  my sophmore year and i made a 16. The science and math part of ACT really got to me because it was the hardest to me. i am really trying to improve my score to a better score because i know i can do better. Plus, right now i have band practice and band camp is coming up. Everyday, i have to try to practice on my horn for band and then try to find time to study for my ACT while i am trying to find a job at the same time. it is just too much stress for me.

hey everyone :)

I'm studying for SATs too, going to be a junior nextyear.  I just want to say that we should all work super hard this summer so that when we actually take the tests, we don't regret anything, and get the best possible score.

Well, I took the ACT not to long ago and i made a 15 on it. It's not that hard it was pretty easy for myself. The only thing that really messed me up was not bring my calulator, which i could have done better. I studied the book, but really think it helped. Its all about timing yourself and pasteing yourself as you go through the test.

Keep in mind that most colleges require a minimum of a 19 to be admitted to a state college.  If you have a lower score take a class to help you get it up or go to a trade school.

By the way, I read a book that really helped me not be nervous about tests. It was called "Zen in the Art of the SAT." Weird title, but it helped me quite a bit. It has strategies for test-taking and calming down. My personal favorite chapter: meditation.

Honestly, the best book you can get that is the most accuarate to study for the SATs is the Official  SAT study guide (aka the Blue Book) from the Collegeboard. The exams are old SAT exams that the equating section was removed from. Since its from the test maker, its the closest you can get to the real thing.

If you are looking for strategy, that is a bit more subjective. I personally like the Barrons book because the questions are a bit harder, not everyone likes that.
