Posted 8 months ago Well I am not a big fan of need-based scholarships. My freshmen year, I put that I was dependent on my mom eventhough i pay for everything on my own. I got some help from the government which was nice. Later that year, my mom got married to my step-dad and continue to not really support me. When the following year, fafsa time came around, I barely qualified for anything because they were now married and claiming taxes together. Also, after putting that my mom claims me, I can't be claimed as an independent, which I have pretty much been since the age of 16. I have trouble finding more scholarships that are not so need based and am struggling to keep up with my loans. Any sort of little scholarship helps.

Posted 8 months ago It sucks!! I was adopted only four years ago and my parents are freakin' rich, but they are not paying anything for my college. In fact, the whole time I have been living here, I have been paying everything for myself. I have been working here and there. It sucks!! While other people have cell phones, ipods, cars, and other shit. I have none of that. While other people's parents pay for their living expenses, I have hand-me-down clothes, I pay for my own freakin' doctors, orthodontist, and dentist fees. I also pay for anything like AP testings, SAT testings, yearbooks, or anything else that is related to me! I tried to apply for a work-study program (of course I'm not getting grant), but got freakin' rejected because my father earned over fucking $200,000 last year and my mom earned over $150,000 last years!!! I hate my life!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Also, I'm moving out of the house once college starts and I will have to fully support myself. Why the hell do I have to pay for full tuition and shit when I have practically supported myself for the past few years without my parents' help???

Posted 8 months ago I feel that need based scholarships are a good thing for many students who would be unable to attend college without the extra help. It is true that their are many who will not qualify for various reasons. A parents responsibility doesn't end once their child graduates from high school. It continues as the child seriously pursues higher education. Need based scholarships are a great help to those parents who don't have the means to pay for their childs higher education but who will do all that they are able to do in helping their child pursue their goals.

Posted 8 months ago @WenC11: Wow. If what you say is true, then my deepest sympathies. Even though, to be fair, I don't believe parents are financially responsible for their children's postsecondary education, having to pay for almost everything else seems a bit much. Any normal parent with the means would take care of as much as reasonably possible so their child can focus on secondary academic work; I hope your grades and AP scores haven't suffered because of all this. (But on the upside, they fed you and gave you a place to live, right?) My concerns are microscopic in comparison to yours. Oh, and thanks for your hilarious rant; it'll make my slew of scholarship/contest rejections and the hours of effort I'll be wasting on a worthless essay much more digestible.

Posted 8 months ago they suck for me because my parents make too much money for me to even be eligible for need based scholarships but not enough to send me to college

Posted 8 months ago My mom doesn't make much to support my younger siblings, and to help pay for my school, but the gov't seems to think that she can pay for most of my tuition, so I get very little help from those in power to help. So, need-based, but the way they figure it out is bad.
