So I really want to major in Creative Writing, but my parents don't want that for me. Is there anyone who is majoring or has majored in Creative Writing that is willing to tell me more about it?

I am double-majoring in Journalism and English - Creative Writing. I have not yet taken any creative writing courses yet — I am a sophomore at the moment and only recently declared my English major with the CW concentration. If your parents are worried about the job prospects after college of having a CW major, you could always do a double-major with another field that might have more job prospects after school. That is why I am also majoring in Journalism, because it is more likely I will be able to find a good job in the Journalism field. You could also just minor in Creative Writing and major in something else you are interested in. But in the end, if you really want to pursue Creative Writing, don't let anyone tell you you can't, not even your parents. It's your life and your college career, do what makes you happy! You don't want to spend college working towards a major you don't even enjoy.

I think you should enter college as undeclared, and explore all of your options. That way, you can have time to sit in on creative writing classes, and research it at your college. Maybe take one creative writing class in your first semester. That way, you can humor your parents, and take your time researching your major. If you still love creating writing, than I'd go with it. And try to double major in something else. Something that you love, but also something more "practical". If you really love creative writing, you should follow your heart with it.

If you really like Creative Writing then you should go for it. If you have no way of using it as a career choice you could use it to get into a grad school. Or maybe you could do something with libral arts and sciences -- it sounds like you pretty set with Creative Writing, though, but it's always an option. The choice should always be up to you.

Hey, I was thinking about double-majoring in Journalism (print concentration) and English (literature concentration) and wondering if it's hard to manage having two. I know that since they are kind of closely related they will share some of the same courses and take up the extra electives, but will I probably be able to graduate on time? And will it cost me extra money? It seems like a really good choice, but I plan on going to University of Missouri - Columbia (fingers crossed I get in) and I know it's really competitive there. Scares me a little to be honest.

I am a current Creative Writing major deeply planeted into my degree.

The classes I've taken have been astounding; my university is amazing in this program.  I must say: it would be hard for me to major in anything else and keep my GPA alive.  My Creative Writing classes have kept my GPA above the shortcomings of my general university requirements classes (science & math in particular).

If your parents are worried about you vocationally, that's somewhat understandable, but the Creative Writing degree is highly underrated.  A Bachelor's in Creative Writing is a strong applicant to many humanities Master's degree programs inside & outside of the English department - I have looked at many universities' master's programs and seen that they think highly of BA's and BFA's in Creative Writing.  A degree in Creative Writing helps you to understand the fundamentals of communication and language - essential for any office or administrative job.  Creative Writing is also essential for many editor jobs and professional/technical writing gigs.  And, as you will soon find out, Creative Writers also make great teachers.  Many people will ask you if you intend to be a teacher.  Or a librarian.  And much much more!

If your school allows minors or certificates, let your minor be the focus of your major.  So, if you want to be a technical writer, get a minor in Professional Writing or Journalism.  If you want to be a teacher, get a minor in Education.  If you want to do administrative stuff, get a minor in Business Administration or Accounting.  If you want to be a translator, get a minor in Linguistics or a specific language.

My Creative Writing major is supported by my minors in Classical Greek Language and Web Design, making it as pragmatic as it is fun!

Do what you love.  In this life, you may not have many chances to.
