Head to the library if you can and see if there are any books by Gen and Kelly Tanabe.  They wrote a few great books that share many tips about winning essays.  My favorite of theirs is "Get Free Cash for College, 3rd Edition...Secrets to Winning Scholarships".  It contains helpful tips on creating winning essays, and much more.

The cool thing about these authors is they were able to win more than 100k in scholarship money to pay for their Harvard education.  It's an easy read if I do say so myself.
