I need that same information. Here I am 52 and just going to College and yet I'm told I need a co-signer for a private loan because I am a Freshman?? Come on now there has to be some place for me without needing a co-signer. Any ideas??

Fill out the FAFSA:

http://www.fafsa.ed.gov/

It will ask about your income and your parent's income last year, and fill it out honestly. Once you submit it, go to the financial aid office at your college and ask to speak with someone there. Explain that your parent has lost income. Chances are they will ask for some sort of proof and they will tell you how to get it. This might make you eligible for some grants or extra loan money.

As for the part about a co-signer, student stafford loans do not require co-signers. If you are asked to have someone co-sign it, you find a different lender. Also, just because your parent has no income does not mean they cannot co-sign a loan, especially a student loan. This is the website that can help:

I get my loans through Discover and I am VERY happy with them. Here is their link:

As for you, chattie, fill out the FAFSA using your info. This is required to get certain student loans and it will also determine your eligibility for grants (money you do not pay back- it's a gift). Your school will somehow connect you with lenders and typically none of them require co-signers. An added bonus: these loans will not have to be paid back until a few months after you leave school whereas private loans usually have to be paid back sooner.
