What if you don't qualify for financial aid?

Posted about 1 month ago I'm a senior (will graduate 6/2010) and have been accepted at the college of my choice. I already know that I won't qualifty for financial aid (my mom doesn't drink, dad doesn't beat me, and I'm not missing a limb). Because of that, I'm guessing that I can't apply to scholarships that say "must demonstrate financial need". But what about the ones that state something like, "financial need will be considered"? Would it be a waste of time to apply for those? Just because you don't qualify for FAFSA doesn't mean you are rolling in dough. For middle class families like mine, it's a struggle too. JP |

| Posted about 1 month ago Although I am one of the students who fall into the category of financially needy and I can use the fafsa I understand where you are coming from. The sad fact is that the financial aid system is set up to to help those who could technically afford to pay back (or at least their parents/guardians/cosigners etc could) their student debt regardless of whether or not they finish their degree program. What that results in is anyone who truly needs rarely gets it. As for your question, not it's not a waste of time at all. All "financial need will be considered" means is if they have difficulty choosing a winner that the deciding factor will likely be who has the lowest income or less resources to fund their education. |

| Posted about 1 month ago Thanks MaryH239. Sorry to sound so flippant about FAFSA. I'm the youngest in our family and my parents are already paying two college loans. I don't know how we're going to find the money for my education and it gets frustrating. But I shouldn't have made the "missing limb" joke. Poor taste. Thanks for the info. I guess applying to those scholarships too would be worth a try. |
