Not true. The AP is optional for everyone and it does not necessarily mean less years spent working on your major. To decrease your college career by a year, you would have to take and do very well on 8 AP exams. (A full-time year is 24 credits, typical classes 3 credits each.) Also, colleges differ in what credit they give for certain scores on certain AP tests. Something helpful at one school might be useless at another.


It's true that taking the AP can be helpful and can save you money on tuition but take into consideration that you could sit in a stuffy room and take a foreign language AP exam and get the credit at your college or you could just have the language requirement at your college waived by proving you took and passed so many years of that language in high school and use those extra credit hours on more fascintating electives.
