According to a recent story, "A new phenomenon has surfaced on campuses in the form of what media and medical professionals are calling drunkorexia, which is a combination of binge drinking and existing eating disorders.

"Students, in an effort to keep their weight under control or, in some cases, balance their checkbook, limit their food calorie intake during the day to 500 or fewer or purge to compensate for the alcohol calories they plan to consume later that night."

Do you know anyone who has this problem? Have you yourself carried out symptoms of "drunkorexia"? Is the behavior dangerous in your eyes or is it simply a common sense way to approach social life on campus?

And most importantly, how can this problem be stopped?

I anticipate that many kids doing this will continue 4 drinks at a time, 4 days a week, for a good part of their adult life, thinking that it is pretty acceptable behavior.   I know several great 20 somethings who think this way.  As adults this is considered functioning alcoholic behavior.  I am concerned about this risky behavior, especially the risky business decisions made by these individuals.    And,  I anticipate Alzheimer rates to increase substantially in their later adult years.

Hi, my name is Marci Rasmussen, I am an alcoholic.  I always binged drank and thought is was exceptable.  I was being part of the crowd and thought this was how to have fun...had I known or ever been warned that I was to become an alcoholic, I may have been a little more wise.  I now have been sober for 9 years, but it took me until the age of 40 to realize, I didn't drink normal.  Normal drinkers, don't binge.  They have a glass of wine with dinner or a (one) or maybe two drinks when socializing.  That is normal, 4 or more is not, it never is.  It lowers your inhibitions, it puts all our children at great risks, risks of Drunk Driving, Sex, Rape even murder.  This is not a subject that should be taken lightly.  We all know better, the problem is, there are a lot of "functional" alcoholics that are mentors to our children.  Sad, but true.  I now choose to be a mentor of someone that lives a full, happy, functional life without alcohol.  I wish that for all our children, mine thankful has made the choice not to drink, not to take the chance, that he to, might go down that dark road.  Much love and prayers.

Thank you Lbanderson for your post re:  "drunkorexia"

This is a new term to me but a very serious one.  The fact is, whether you are binge drinking or purging, you have a problem that needs to be addressed immediately.   Neither is acceptable no matter what age you are.  As a college student that finds this just a phase on campus, think; would you want a person like this to be driving towards you in a car??  I hope not.  If you are a college student and notice another student showing this type of behavior, either on or off campus, then you need to help them!  There is absolutely no excuse for this type of behavior.   Don't turn your back on someone even if it's your friend.  The Student Services Department of every school can help direct you to find help.  This may be a persons way of getting the attention they desperately need and may be afraid to ask a family member.  As one person said, it can lead to drunk driving, rape or murder.  Think of it as saving a life or your own!!!

Don't do it or help others that are doing it.  In other words, help stop this disease.  Someday, it could be your child.  Remember, both are the victims here.

Wow. This just screams dangerous. As if it's not bad enough to drink excessively anyway, drinking on an empty stomach can put you at a greater risk for alcohol poisoning.
