I took the ACT in my junior year but I missed the SAT because I was sick.  I did really well on the ACT but the SAT seems to  be more popular where I am.  Should I take the SAT or just use my ACT scores?

Definitely take the SAT. If you took the ACT and did well, you'll probably do just as well on the SAT. What is there to lose?!? I would do it. :)

I've taken both the SAT and ACT and from my experience the tests really cater to two different types of people. The SAT is much more about intuitive ability to problem solve and reason on all parts of the test and the ACT is more about your general level of knowledge. Personally I did relatively better on the SAT while my friend did much better on his ACT. So to sum it up, it's really to each his own I guess. There's really no reason not to take the SAT because colleges generally take the higher test score comparatively of the two if they accept both, especially with the possibility that you can do much better on the SAT.

not to get technical, but it all depends on where you grew up because east and west coast schools gear their learning for the SAt and midwest schools gear their learning for the ACT. even though they may seem like they are the same the test different skills. but i agree that you have nothing to loose so you should just take it!

The SAT is a lot more about strategy, while the ACT measures your general knowledge more (like JoeG417 said). On the SAT you have to know vocabulary but on the ACT you don't. On the SAT you can get away with not reading the whole reading passages before you go on to the questions, but the ACT reading passages have questions that don't go in order and ask more about the main idea, so you need to read all of the passages. There's 4 and each one has 10 questions, but you only get 35 minutes to do it so it's really hard to finish the Reading section. There's also a Science section, which is not on the SAT at all. You don't really have to be good at science to do it, though: it's mostly just logic and reading graphs and tables.

Also, the SAT takes off -1/4 points for every wrong answer, but the ACT takes off zero. It only counts up how many you get right! So the ACT is better in a lot of ways but it's also harder in a lot of ways. I would recommend taking it. Hope this helps!

Ok I have taken both the ACT and the SAT and I liked the ACT better. The tests are for two different groups of people. The SAT is more for the kids that think about things and the ACT is for kids who know the facts like 2 + 2 = 4. That is what the ACT is about. I have also heard that if you do well on one, you will most likely do horrible on the other. That is what happened to me.

Well I took both because I figured that I could maybe get more money for college. I would say to take both, but that is just my opinion.

Hey...before you take both, look to see what the colleges you want to go to require. Most will accept the ACT so if that's the case, don't bother with the SAT. That's what my teacher for the ACT-SAT prep class told me. I'm going to take both, but only because I think the school i want to go to wants the SAT. Hope that helps.

PS...don't quit school and sell drugs like tunahater323 says. You'll find yourself in a mess of trouble of you listen to that. . :(

Girls sttistically do better on the ACT, I took the SAT and got the equivalent of a 23 onit, when I took the ACT I got a 29 after only studying half the book! Take both, and then whichever one feels easier and you do better on, take again and see if you can improve your score.

Thanks for the help everybody!  I decided to take the SAT just to see how well I do.  I think I did pretty well, so if my scores are less good than my ACT scores, I don't think they will be terribly low.  But thanks for the help!  It was really useful!

It all depends on your achedemic strenghths. While both tests do have a math portion as well as a writing/grammar portion, the SAT is a more in depth test for english. There is an essay, also the very long list of vocabulary words that a student needs to know before that exam ( there's a huge section that is the "retrospect : prediction as salvation :                 " stuff; if you don't know the vocab you'll struggle through it). The ACT focuses more on math and science, so you better understand the basics of biology, chemistry, and physics as well as a good foundation in algebra. Also on one of them points are subtracted if the answer is wrong, so if you don't know it leave it blank ; the other ponits are subtracted for unanswered problems, so if time is running out christmas tree it. The only thing is i don't remember which is which.... heehee sorry!

On the ACT, you get points taken off for unanswered questions. The SAT subtracts, I believe, a 1/4 of a point for each wrong answer and does not take off for unanswered questions.

You should without a doubt take the SAT. Who's to say you won't do even better. There are a lot of college that require an SAT score to apply.

Take the SAT........If you want to get into a good college.Take the SAT.

Good Luck!....Take the SAT!

I took both tests, and I did much better on the ACT than the SAT.  I thought the ACT was ridiculously easy, but colleges don't care about that.  They basically see the tests as equal, at least from the requirements I've seen.  Because of my ACT score, I got an auto-acceptance.

I hated the SAT.  You basically have to be a math-whiz to do "well."  If I had known that it would be so awful, I would have only taken the ACT, but I took the SAT first.  If you got above a 25, stick with it.  Save yourself.

You can apply for financial aid. That's always an option. Ask your school counselor about it.

Good Luck!

It's not necessarily a bad thing.  It can't hurt.  If you have already signed up then there is no point in NOT taking it.  You can always say you don't want your scores sent to the colleges.  Some colleges do require both SAT, ACT, and SAT II's, so check your college requirements and see if you do need both.
