Medical or music?

Posted 2 months ago I have been thinking about either going into a medical field for college, or going into music... Music is my number one passion (I play piano, guitar, sing, and write songs), but the only problem is that I have heard that it can be hard to make enough money off of it. This would be my first pick, if it wasn't for the money problem. That is where the medical field comes in. I am also interested in this major. I am so confused... what would you do? Follow your passion, or make alot of money? |

| Posted 2 months ago Go with your passion. I personally feel like if you get into a job that your not fully happy with you wont really want to go. If i were you though i would go into the medical field save some money & if you end up liking were your at stay there & if not, go towards music. |

| Posted about 1 month ago I have the same issue. I am choral singer and theatre performer, but my brother recieved his degree in Theatre Arts at least five years ago and is just starting to get okay money. I intend on starting a life - family and stuff - when I'm at least 25. So, i figured I'd go into the medical field - dermatology or pediatrics, but recently I've began having doubts about if I'd be happy in that. It is interesting, no doubt, but when I hear music I'm just inspired. What I'm thinking of doing, is majoring in Med and minoring in the Arts. I've also been looking into other careers that make good money quickly that complement my creative side, but so far it's been hard. |

| Posted about 1 month ago you should really do what you like. if you like music go for it. if you want medical go for it. or you could do a major and minor. for example: medical as your major music as your minor or vise-versa. and i would go for the money, the economny is getting really tough, but you got to do what you have to do! sorry:( |

| Posted 29 days ago Follow your dreams! I know that's cliche, but it's really true. Music is one of the few things that can touch the soul. If you really need the money, try busking (playing on the street for money, you may need a permit), giving music lessons, accompanying people, and of course performing. |

| Posted 29 days ago i have the saaammmee problem. i'm just a junior but i feel like i'm battling within myself with whether I should go with what my heart tells me to do, which would probably be the right thing; or secure my future with a good major that would provide that for me. |

| Posted 29 days ago Which job would you do if they didn't pay you any money? Which job would you not mind getting up early in the morning or staying up late at night? If you see it as an obligation, I don't think it's the career for you. I try to follow this quote, it might not be 100% right, but at least it is deep and meaningful. "If you like what you do, you never have to work a day in your life"

| Posted 28 days ago I am in the exact same boat as you. Unfortunately I also have a few more minor interests that are completely unrelated. If it helps you here is my story thus far. Throughout high school I was completely involved in all things music and theatre, I also wanted to be a doctor. I applied for the pre-med program and was enrolled for the entire summer leading up to my freshman year of college. Within the first week I changed my class schedule 3 times and my major 5. Right now I am in social work with a theatre and music therapy interest. Unfortunately I am still viewing all the other options as something else I would like to do. It is and will always be a struggle until you find that one job that fits you perfectly. Right now I have decided upon persuing a Physicians Assistant position or even Specialized Nursing to have both pay and freetime to spend with family and doing the things I love. I still find myself worrying about money issues as well, but when it comes down to it, one can easily survive on minimum wage or less if they are willing and innovative. Best of luck, its a hard choice. |

| Posted 24 days ago WELL I'm pretty stuck just like you. I play guitar, sing, write songs, play ukulele, and the drums. I want to be a firefighter so i'm going to college for EMS training, but I want to minor in music but I have NO IDEA what to look for in a college or what to even ask because I suck at this. =] good luck though |

| Posted 23 days ago You need to choose a career that suits you both financially and personality wise. Whats all the money worth if you hate your job? On the other hand, you don't want to have your dream job and then find yourself struggling to pay the bills. I suggest job shadowing, volunteering, or internships to help you decide. I wasn't sure about wanting to be a nurse until I began volunteering and then I was sold on it. |

| Posted 20 days ago I would go with the medical field. It's more of a dependable job, and you can make aroun 600$ +/ week on beginners pay. Depending what part you are going into. You could still do Music as a side thing, and if it really takes off then you could give a two week notice and quit. Then if it starts getting hard because you can"t do music anymore you will always have that medical education that you can go back to. |

| Posted 20 days ago Do both. don't stop what you've already done and motivate yourself to follow your dreams. at the same time **excuse my french** but cover your ass and motivate yourself to find something small to study that you can balance with your music so you have a back up plan. Me, i couldn't live without music. I sing and write and play sax. unfortunately, i'm trapped in the medical field as a pharmacy assistant because of a blessed opportunity at a promising job. however, i still write and push for studio time and im still goin to school to get my certificate to be a licensed pharmacy technician to fall back on. I know this is not where my heart is 100%, i really want to do something artistic and expressive with my life and making music takes me out of this world, but with this earthly reality my job helps until im out there. While you're young go for your dreams as far as you can because you only get older. Worst comes to worst, you can always go to school and further your education farther than you take it now. Making music doesn't just take education so while your spirit is fresh n full of energy go for it (JUST COVER YOUR *** IN THE MEANTIME WITH SOMETHING SMALL!!) ---->>A N Y T H I N G I S P O S S I B L E !!! Good luck & blessings to you!

| Posted 5 days ago Hi musicalgirl16, consider music therapy, it allows you to utilize your passion in all your music talents and it also allows you to work in the medical field. If you are talented and music is a passion do not give that up. Healthcare needs music therapist.

I've even heard a story about a bassonist who had a bma in basson performance, took some jazz corses on sax, and gained a degree in biology, now they work int the biology fild as a contract anillist over the winter and preforms sax on a cruse ship during the summer. |

| Posted 2 days ago hey i say do them both because you can always major in biomedical sciences or something and then minor in music then u get to have the cake and eat it to. besides there are not that many jobs in music so you can do it for fun and make medical stuff be your bread winner |

| Posted 2 days ago i can't remember the exact word for the specialization, but go for audio engineering if you're really deeply into music. or something that deals with hearing... maybe a psychologist because you might be given a chance to study / research a relationship between music and mental/physical relationships or whatever you know what i mean =) |

| Posted 2 days ago no music doesnt make lots of money at least not for a while. im a music major and what i decided to do is do like an internship for a job that i dont need school for that way u dont have the stress of doin a double major and personally i will always say that music is like the best thing in the world. what field of music do you actually want to get into b/c this plays a big role in this decison. oh and the "follow your heart/dreams" idea is def not the best advice. yes do something that you enjoy cuz u're gonna be doin it for a while but think about it alot |
