Posted 2 months ago Is anyone still interested in the Arts anymore? I am having a difficult time finding an internship in an Art Gallery setting. It seems when ever the topic of Art is brought up people think you are referring to Graphic Arts. The colleges do not have Art History programs or hands on art classes. The schools that do have the program, for example S.C.A.D. in Savannah, GA. requires a portfolio to be admitted which I do not have yet. I realize the internet has taking over our world but what about creativity? There are few schools that have a liberal arts major and art history too. My goal is to enroll in a program that will teach me the knowledge required to be an Art consultant or critique and eventually own my own Art Gallery. I am an artist through oils, acrylics, pastels and charcoal on canvas not a computer. After meeting Alexander Renoir, the great grandson of Pierre Auguste Renoir the French Impressionist, I am focused on learning more of the old masters and continuiing their style of art. If there is a school or gallery that has a program or internship for this type of art I would be most grateful. Thank you! Judi R.

Posted 2 months ago You might want to concentrate on Art History for an undergraduate degree. There are some good post grad programs for the business side. Sotherby's, the auction house, has the equivalent of an MBA for the art world. You are expected to know your art going in. At the end of the 3 year program, you are well qualified to run a gallery. If you want a interesting exerience, check out the University of St. Andrews in the UK. Very well respected program for Art History.

Posted 2 months ago If I were you, I would try to make a portfolio. They are pretty important for art majors and schools.

Posted 2 months ago Unfortunately, most artist are forced to seek some type of degree just to get in the door so to speak. most universities have a pretty good BFA progra, yet if you want a masters degree you often have to attend a more focussed art college. As far as getting internships at a gallery, I would seek out galleries in the largest city close to you and speak to the owner personally, and try to have some examples of your own work, could be slides or a cd of your work.

Thank you for your comment on my "Art World" post. I am familiar with Sotheby's which sounds like an excellent program, however, I need to complete my Bachelor in Fine Art to be elgible. Currently, I am not living in a large city therefore, I am relying on an online school to complete my BFA. Unfortunately, the ones online want to offer me a business management major with a "concentration" in Art History. I understand the knowledge required of a gallery manager or owner, and I would need to be more focused on the Arts in my course work. I have visited countless galleries in the states and abroad and feel I am destined to belong in that environment. In fact, many times I have more knowledge than the employee or guide. Some do not have the "sales" part of it and others are unapproachable. I know I have both! The University of St. Andrews in the U.K. sounds interesting and I will research that school. Thank you again.

| Posted about 1 month ago Fastweb1802 says ... I am very pleased to announce a University that has the Art History Program I was seeking. Ironically, it happens to be the school where I last attended (for 2 years) near my home in S. Florida. Florida Atlantic University in Boca Raton (Palm Beach County) has an excellent Art History program and has expanded quite a bit since I last attended. I finally gave up on the online option and am now determined to complete my Bachelors in Liberal Arts Degree majoring in Art History! At first I thought I had no choice about my future, however my passion for Art and working in and someday owning an Art Gallery, is too much a priority. I am willing to take the steps in selling my home and move back to achieve this long awaited goal. They even have a program to study in France, Italy and Spain. This is exactly what I was looking for and I thank all that responded who gave me the drive to pursue my dream. I am definitely focused and now have all my answers!! Good Luck to anyone in the same situation. A little hard work eventually will help you find your answers too!

Posted about 1 month ago Congratulations on finding a way forward. I think you had the drive in you all the time. You just needed a little focus. You have the passion in you to see you through the starving artist times and see you through to running an art gallery. Keep your eye on the goal.

Posted about 1 month ago RhondaH22, Thank you so much for the kind words about my finding an Art History program. It is nice to see some positive feedback on this site, although I did have some that responded the same way. At that time, I was still in the "hunt and search" part of my discovery. I feel I have a weight lifted off of me now that I have the knowledge I was seeking. I have already contacted the school and they are having an Open House on campus in October. You are right about the starving artists. What some have gone through, like the French Impressionists, is what made me continue on my journey. Now, my next step is to focus on the available scholarships, another challenge along my path. I wish others on this site would have the same enthusiasum. Thank you again. :)!!
