Adult Student With financing concerns

Posted 2 months ago I am a divorced 40 year old father of 2. I share joint custody of my children, son (just turned 18), daughter 15. I was recently laid off (facility closure) and am collecting unemployment. Although searching for work, I have a strong desire to go back to school and get my Bachelor's degree. I have chosen on line studies, however with my newly limited income, I don't know if this is possible. Any advice will be greatly appreciated, for I feel completely lost and out of the loop since it's been several years since attending school etc. I guess my questions are: 1. What financial Aid is available for Adult Students wanting to go back to school/further education? 2. Are there government incentives for those unemployed individuals wanting to go back to school? 3. Other help for those adult students with a child/children also attending school?
I appreciate any/all feedback! Robb |

| Posted 2 months ago Well I am in the same boat as you 40 yrs old unemployed and wanting to go back to school. So far my experience has been that there is little if any funding for adults. If you are poor enough you can get the goverment pell grants and state grants. You can usually get a stafford loan which has a VERY low interest rate and may be susidised by the goverment if you qualify. (they pay the interest while you are in school) But beyond that I don't know. I hear there is some money from obama But you have to go through your local workforce/ unemployment center. I am going in a few weeks and they give you career counseling in order to be eligible. They told me there were 4-5 options but I don't know if they are good or bad. Go down to yours and see what they say. |

| Posted 25 days ago The local workforce/ unemployment centers have all been out of money basically about a week after they received the obama money. Well, sorry, I had a job & was paying my part for everyone else to go through this program. LOL Basically, because we all worked, we won't be eligible for any real financial aid until 2011/2012 IF we have no other wages until then. I've been told to take out a loan (without a paycheck coming in it won't cover even my classes & books) or I can go get a job (seriously- unemployment told me that.) If I had a job, I could keep taking online night classes for the next 8-10 years(which was my original had-to plan) OR I could get some help (even a good loan) & have my bachelors in Banking/ Finance in 2-2.5 and get a real job when the market turns around. I love the system! Grrr...... |

| Posted 25 days ago Grants are a great starting point, and college loans, depending on the banking institution, most do not make you start paying it back until after you graduate. By then you may have at least a part-time job. But for now, at least you're getting un-emplyoment. Does your 15yr old live with you? If you are paying child support and receiving unemployment, the courts can lower what you were paying according to your income. There are earned income tax credits (EITC) you can get from when you were working even if you don't have a child to claim. If you can claim your 15 yr. old you receive more. If your 18 yr. old is in college the same time as you, you will get more money. That's like found money for school! You can go online line to www.irs.gov. to see info. on Education Tax Credits also...look up the Hope Credit and the Lifetime Learning Credit. Good Luck! |
