Been looking for a way to get my student loans forgiven.

I'm 56 years old living below the poverty level on food stamps and so far have a 2.95 GPA.

Still have about 2 years at 3/4 time before graduating with first bachelors degree.  Have racked up

quite a high loan balance.  Would appreciate any ideas.

Get a job in a social services field. This is an email from my brother the drug & alcohol counselor, who just completed his MHS:

"For anyone trying to save $ with their student loans who is working for a nonprofit or is involved in other public service check out the IBR plan and the 10 year loan forgiveness plan  (  http://www.ibrinfo.org/what.vp.html  ) .  Also the link below (if you live in New Jersey) that will pay $5,000 a year for four years directly to your lender.

At first I thought I wasn’t eligible for the above link until I found out you can still be working for the same agency as before the eligibility date if you receive a promotion (which is, in essence, a different job) that is a result or requirement of your education.

The American Education Services loans are not eligible, as they are, for the 10 year loan forgiveness program for public service employees.  You need to change them to a Federal Direct Consolidation Loan (see following link).   https://loanconsolidation.ed.gov/AppEntry/apply-online/appindex.jsp   You can consolidate them with the US Dept. of Education Loan some of you may have received in your last semester (that’s what I got).  The US Dept. of Education Loans is eligible for the 10 loan forgiveness program as they are.

Keep in mind that you have to start paying 60 days after your application.  If you want to enjoy your grace period they advised me to apply 1 ½ months before it runs out.  If you do this you will be able to make the lowest possible monthly payments with the IBR plan and then have the balance wiped out after 10 years!  If you utilize the New Jersey HESAA Student Loan Redemption Plan you will take another $20,000 off your debt!"

Good luck!
