Best Jobs for Working Students

For many of you, a job to help pay the tuition bills is a must. However, you don’t have to resign yourself to flipping burgers at minimum wage. Depending on your school, there can be hundreds of student jobs available that pay well and can provide you with valuable experience to put on your resume. Here are a few campus jobs that are highly sought after.
Work-Study Programs
As part of your financial aid package, you may be eligible for work study positions across campus. These jobs run the gamut from working in the library to manning the reception desk at the gym to working in an academic department. A portion of what you earn will be used to pay for tuition.
Research Assistant
Faculty members are often looking for students to assist them in research. If you plan on majoring in the sciences or engineering, research experience is vital to your future career goals. Ask professors in your department if they or anyone else is looking to hire student research assistants.
Resident Assistant
Being an RA in dorm takes a lot of responsibility and leadership and looks great on a resume. While you’re usually not paid by the hour, there is one giant perk usually in the form of free room and board for the school year. A couple of years as an RA and you can shed tens of thousands off your tuition bill.
Tutoring
Peer tutoring is a great way to make some dough while in school. Your school will often pay you to tutor in areas like Math, Science, and Writing. Not only will you get to meet new people and strike up new friendships, it’s also a great resume booster.

Other than the professors directly, who would one talk to about getting a grad assistantship? Is there a certain department - I have tried to talk to financial aid and have not heard yet from them..

this would be perfect for me. I am either going to major in biology or civil engineering. Being an assistant would not only pay but would also be a benefical way to learn more about my major.

shelleb27- a scribe is a person who works with a doctor in the emergency room. You basically get to follow the doctor around to see all of the patients and document on everything that happens in a computer. You update labs and radiology reports and keep track of the patients. This site has some info http://premedjourney.com/what-is-an-er-scribe

I would love to do an intership at a Substaint Abuse Treatment Center in Iowa or some where close because I wan to be a Substains Abuse Counselor when I'm finished at Kaplan University. If anyone has a sujestion as where to look for this type of help please let me know. I think it would be good to do an internship at a place where you want to work after college.

Another great job to have while in grad school or even in after your second year in undergrad is a substitute teacher. While supervising students, you can do papers, study, or read materials for class. It is very flexible and every school system needs them. All you have to do is contact your local school system or go on the website and apply. I love the flexibilty of it!!!
