The Black College Expo will return once again to Prince Georges County for a sixth year. The expo will take place on Saturday, October 31st, 2009 from 9 am to 3 pm at the University of Maryland, College Park in the Reckord Armory, with an after-show from 3 pm -5 pm.

The mission this year is to provide more resources and on the spot admissions to colleges and scholarships in a time when education is vital from the White House to the streets. One of the main seminar topics will be “How to find money for College”, in which one of the presenters and collaborative partners Jessica Johnson, who received over $200,000 in scholarships for herself when she attend Howard University will share the secret.

There will be a special roll out of a program in which college students can receive up to $4,300 a month for college. Students will meet with various colleges, including 30+ historically black colleges and universities (HBCUs). Some colleges will be accepting students on the spot. Industry representatives will also be actively recruiting college students and recent graduates for internship and career opportunities.

The Black College Expo and its non-profit arm, National College Resources Foundation (NCRF), is a full service student outreach program geared towards underrepresented youth and their families to curtail the high school drop out rate (currently at 30.1% nationally, according to EPE Research Center 2008) and to increase the college graduation rate among underserved and underrepresented groups. “Our goal is to do all we can to make college a reality for more of our youth and guide them toward positive career choices,” says Founder, Theresa Price.

The day’s events culminate with scholarship presentations to deserving students, a KFC step-show & dance competition and surprise celebrity guests. National spokespersons for the program are actor/ comedian Kel Mitchell and Grammy nominated artist rapper Yo-Yo.

The Black College Expo, visits five to seven cities annually including Los Angeles, Oakland, Atlanta, Chicago, Houston, New York and Washington, D.C./Maryland, now in its tenth year, has helped to increase college enrollment tremendously, in some cases by as much as 50% at some HBCUs. Black College Expo has helped over 250,000 students get into college and has given away over $500,000 in scholarships.

National sponsors for the 2009 BCE include: Title Sponsor Navy, KFC, Wells Fargo, Internal Revenue Service, Southern California Edison, The Gas Company/SDG&E/Sempra Energy, NAACP 100 Remix, Black Enterprise, Upscale Magazine, Union Bank, CVS/pharmacy, and Safeway.

Yes, why are't African American men eligible for grants and scholarships portrayed in these ads? And African Americans who have felonies in there background eligible to receive grant and scholarship money as well? Why must these folks(felons) pay double for mistakes and continue to be "locked out" of achieving some type of education that may help them manuver back into mainstream living. If you are born in these United States and you make a mistake, your whole life shuts down verses a foreigner entering the country to seek the 'American Dream" and receives all sorts of funding, assistance, loans, housing, grants, scholarships, etc...something is wrong with this picture American! Makes you wonder whether if there's some underlying plot to keep a certain group of individuals locked out and ineligible for funding to achieve some type of trade or education to make the world a better place for everyone to live,

I agree with ShermanJ. I have been researching and searching for scholarship money for my son who is not attending a historical black college. If you are not a member of a prestige club or will attend a HBC you are out of luck. Regardless of the college that a person attends, they should be eligible/qualified for ANY scholarship or grant.

There is some much talk about black men going to college to get an education to better themselves, but there is NO MONEY to give to them.

I have found in my experience that unless you are a member of the naacp or plan to attend a historical black college therels is no african american scholarship money for you.
