Community Colleges Across the Nation at Breaking Points

Many community colleges across the nation are at a breaking point in terms of enrollment numbers--could the economy be to blame?

BOSTON, Sept. 4 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ — Bunker Hill Community College President Mary Fifield called an emergency meeting of key staff yesterday when it became apparent that the College was at a breaking point due to the overwhelming student enrollments filling every available course.

In addition to the standard fall class schedule, the College added 108 new class sections over the summer to the schedule. As a result of yesterday’s meeting, 40 new classes were added within 24 hours. These 40 classes will begin on September 14, a week later than the start of the fall semester on September 8.

The College had projected an enrollment increase of seven percent for fall. “Today enrollment is up by 23 percent over last year and still climbing. We just topped 10,000 students, the highest ever for BHCC,” Fifield said. “We even have two new classes starting at midnight. We are holding classes in the Schrafft’s Center, near the College. Existing faculty are taking on more courses, and we are hiring new faculty as fast as we can locate instructors with appropriate qualifications and experience.”

Bunker Hill Community College is the largest community college in Massachusetts. The College enrolls more than 10,000 students on two campuses and at five satellite locations each semester. More than 1,500 students take classes online. BHCC is one of the most diverse institutions of higher education in the Commonwealth. Six in ten students are people of color and more than half of BHCC’s students are women. The College also enrolls more than 690 international students who come from more than 95 countries and speak 75 different languages.

Community colleges are bursting with enrollment this year. My cousin has to stay with our aunt and uncle because they couldn't fit him into the dorms.

The "big" schools will also need to take a page from the CC and offer more NIGHT classes. That's one of the biggest reason why CC is so popular. Yes, many want to go to the big schools, but the schools only have so many night classes, they are limited in the subjects that you can take. Now with my CC, BCC, I can pretty much get the degree that I'm working for at the moment all at NIGHT. I am single, live on my own, have bills and I have to work. The only time I can go to school is at night. So why can't the big schools do this as well? The future of our country DOES NOT just belong to the young. It belongs to ALL OF US, old and young alike.

I'm so glad that Massachusetts is able to do the right thing and support their community by hiring additional faculty and adding classes. The California State School system has cut the budget of higher education institutions which has resulted in an extreme amount of layoffs and students who are unable to learn because they are being denied the classes they need. The California state government cut massive amounts of money from education when they should be pushing for California Community Colleges to expand and educated the intellectually hungry.

Finally 4 years colleges wil see they need to change the expectation of high tuition, costly books, untrained research professors as teachers and limited or poor resources. Now students will actually be able to perform the 3Rs and use them; no more large, anonymous classes, where plagarism flourishes, cheating via texting; and lack of educational resources, such as tutoring... so good luck to the new students...
