Where to Find the Hottest Homecomings
Homecoming season is upon us. But which schools boast the biggest and best homecoming bashes around? Here are our top picks for Homecomings across the country.
Howard University Homecoming
There’s a reason Howard’s Homecoming is mentioned in the rap lyrics of hip hop stars like Ludacris and Biggie. And yes, it does live up to the hype. The party extends off campus and essentially shuts down chunks of D.C. Students, alumni and celebrities galore all converge on the Historically Black College’s campus, for what’s described as the largest black event in the nation and the largest homecoming of any college in the country— boasting over 100,000 participants annually. Each year, the student-run Homecoming Steering Committee plans a theme around which the campus’ dozens of events are focused. The events include an R&B concert, Rap concert, yard fest, step show, comedy show, celebrity basketball game, fashion show, parade and of course, the football game. But there’s more. Yes… LOTS more. It’s the place to see and be seen.
Penn State University’s Homecoming
It’s a party school. It was the Princeton Review’s #1 party school in the nation, according to its 2009-2010 survey. So how could it not throw a kickin’ homecoming bash? They do it big, with a carnival and field day, tailgate competition and floats. Unlike Howard, where the game plays second fiddle to the other events, at Penn State homecoming focuses on the game (and the tailgaiting)! Tons of alumni, amazing house parties, adherence to tradition and a highly ranked college team make the celebration one to remember. What’s better, you don’t have to worry about the parties going too late— the whole town gets into the festivities and everything revolves around homecoming for the week.
- North Carolina A&T —Boasts 40,000 alumni and students to watch the Aggies defend their turf.
- Vanderbilt University — Awesome performing arts displays.
- University of Missouri— Possibly the oldest homecoming celebration in the country.
- University of Florida—Its Gator Growl is the largest-student run pep rally in the world and boasts world-renowned musical and comedic talent.
