Entertaining for the Holidays on a Budget

Sometimes, the family you have isn’t just related to you by blood. Rather, your idea of family extends to the friends you’ve made at school. The holiday months, therefore, not only bring your family together but your family of friends as well. This year, celebrate the season, the end of finals and save money at the same time with these ideas for entertaining on a budget.
Potluck Dinner. Whether you celebrate Thanksgiving, Hanukah, Kwanzaa or Christmas, there is one thing that brings everyone together: food. Organizing a potluck is simple. Just ask each guest to bring a dish but be sure that you don’t end up with six entrees. Rather, split the responsibilities up: two guests bring appetizers, two bring entrees and the others are responsible for sides and desserts. Make the meal really exotic by bringing dishes to celebrate your respective holiday traditions.
Movie Night. Who doesn’t love Chevy Chase in Christmas Vacation? Or tear up when George Bailey makes it home to his family at the end of It’s a Wonderful Life? Laugh and cry with your friends while saving big. Chip in on the rental fee and between eight of your closest friends, you’ll have spent 50 cents on a night together.

White Elephant Gift Exchange. You know the clichéd, old saying: “One man’s trash is another man’s treasure.” And you know there is that one item in your dorm room or apartment that you don’t like but just can’t throw away. A white elephant gift exchange allows you to trade some of your old junk for some new treasures. It’s also a great way to get all of your friends together without having to spend a dime on presents for each person.
Game Night. The holidays, a time of happiness and cheer, fall right after finals—a time of dread and stress. Celebrate the end of finals, the holiday break and the season with a fun game night. Relax after weeks of excruciating cramming with board game night or a massive card tournament.
