Dominican Republic

Before 1969, the Dominican Republic was just an island of lush jungle. Now, it’s one of the hottest Caribbean destinations on the map, and spring breakers are starting to make their way to Punta Cana.

Must-do: Swim with sharks. That may sound terrifying, but they’re just nurse sharks. You’ll also be able to swim with sting rays and a wide variety of other underwater creatures.

Must-eat: Local food on DR is akin to other Spanish-influenced Caribbean islands. Nearly everything is fried and meat is a staple at every meal. Speaking of staples, the typical lunch is known as La Bandera Dominicana, or the Dominican Flag. The dish is comprised of beans, rice, meat and salad.

Must-see: Try to make a trip to the Plaza Higueyana, an artisan market. You’ll find plenty of company in other tourists. Also, check out the nearby Museo Vivo del Tabaco, where you can experience the entire tobacco growing, harvesting and rolling process. Don’t forget to grab a few hand-rolled cigars for Dad.
