The University

Wright State University (WSU) is a comprehensive doctoral, research institution of approximately 17,000 students and 2,200 faculty and staff members. Through its eleven colleges and schools, Wright State offers over 100 undergraduate majors as well as more than fifty graduate and professional degree programs. Currently celebrating its fortieth anniversary, the University continues to grow and mature as an institution, while striving to maintain an innovative spirit between its faculty members and students and programs and research.

The growing reputation of Wright State has attracted students from throughout Ohio as well as nearly every state in the nation and sixty-nine other countries. The building of additional on-campus student housing has increased the opportunity for students from across the state and the world to attend Wright State. From traditional residence-hall-style dorms to modern apartment-style housing, Wright State offers a variety of campus housing options to fit the needs of todays college student. As a matter of fact, the majority of first-year students choose to be one of the nearly 3,500 students who live on-campus. Wright State also offers a variety of living-learning communities that are designed to allow students with similar goals and interests to share living arrangements and the chance to extend their studies beyond the classroom and into their daily experience. C.H.O.I.C.E./Substance Free Living-learning Community, Honors Living-learning Community, International House, and the Engineering and Computer Science Living-learning Community are some of the more popular living-learning community choices.

Wright State takes pride in keeping up with new technology. State-of-the-art computer labs are located in every academic building and the University library. Each residence hall facility also offers wireless Internet access and 24-hour computer labs. Many classrooms have advanced audiovisual equipment, which has increased the use of technology for instructional purposes by faculty members.

Wright State offers a variety of recreational and social outlets for the campus community. The newly renovated Student Union is the main hub of recreational activity on campus. The new state-of-the-art fitness center offers over fifty pieces of cardio equipment, LCD flat screen displays, cardio theater, group exercise studios, and more. The Student Union also features a new wellness center, which houses Counseling and Wellness Services, Student Health Services, and the WSU Pharmacy; a student-organization suite that is home to more than 150 student clubs and organizations; and a brand new rock-climbing wall. Also adding excitement and energy to campus life, Wright State Universitys sixteen varsity athletics teams compete in the NCAA Division I level through the Horizon League. Wright State athletics is home to champion basketball, baseball, swim, and softball teams.

Nationally-recognized for its active and extensive disability services program, Wright State encourages disabled students to participate in every aspect of the university experience. To meet the needs of disabled students, Wright State facilities have been designed to remove architectural barriers and permit more effective and independent use of the campus. Also, the majority of Wright State buildings are connected by a series of tunnels at the basement level. Students can navigate much of the campus without having to go outside. Applicants who require supportive services should arrange for an interview with the Office of Disability Services at least three months prior to enrollment.

Academic Programs

University College serves as the academic home of many first-year students. It can help students determine and achieve their academic and career goals. Academic advisers in University College provide students with assistance in scheduling courses and meeting entry requirements for their major. All students, regardless of their intended major, must complete a core group of general education requirements.

Students who complete Advanced Placement (AP) or International Baccalaureate (IB) course work while in high school may be granted University credit based on their examination scores. Wright State also accepts credits from accredited institutions earned through dual-enrollment programs, such as Ohios Post Secondary Enrollment Program.

The University honors program creates a learning environment that students would expect to find at a small liberal arts college rather than within a large university. For over 30 years, the program has provided a challenging and unique living-learning environment where students can develop a strong sense of community, engage in critical analysis, experience diversity, and realize their full potential. In addition, the program also provides an opportunity for independent research working one-on-one with faculty members and features a student lounge and study area, special advising, a strong peer group, honors housing, and opportunities for travel, leadership development, and community service. Admission to the honors program is based on ACT and SAT scores, high school grade point average, and class rank. Upon admission to the University, eligible students will be sent an application for the honors program.

Other academic programs of note include Air Force and Army ROTC.

Off-Campus Programs

Wright States membership in the Southwestern Ohio Council for Higher Education enables full-time students to take courses at many area colleges and universities at Wright States tuition rates. Students can also apply their knowledge while gaining hands-on experience through cooperative education and internships. Students who have attained sophomore status can work with the Office of Career Services and faculty members in their major to find co-op and internship opportunities. In addition, many majors include courses that require students to work with community agencies, businesses, and industries to solve real-world problems.

Wright State students who desire an international experience can spend a quarter or more overseas in one of more than twenty countries or travel with a group of Wright State students and faculty members to Ireland, Italy, France, Spain, or Japan during the summer.

Academic Facilities

Major academic buildings on the main campus include the Creative Arts Center, the Paul Lawrence Dunbar Library, the Television Center, four main classroom buildings, the Brehm Laboratory, the Biological Sciences Building, the Joshi Research Center, the Russ Engineering Center, the Mathematical and Microbiological Sciences Building, the Health Sciences Building, the medical sciences building, the Rike Hall Raj Soin Business Building, and the new Matthew O. Wright State students also have access to the libraries of all of the institutions in the Southwestern Ohio Council for Higher Education. The combined library holdings total more than 1 million volumes.

Costs

To support the Ohio legislature and Governor Ted Stricklands plan to encourage more Ohioians to attend college, earn their degrees, and achieve their dreams, the Wright State University Board of Trustees has frozen the current tuition costs for undergraduate students for the 200708 and 200809 academic years. The 200708 cost for tuition and fees for Ohio residents was $2426 per quarter. Tuition and fees for out-of-state students were $4668 per quarter. Room and board fees were $2474 per quarter, and additional expenses, including books and supplies, cost approximately $1500 per year.

Financial Aid

Three forms of financial aid are available: grants and scholarships, which do not require repayment; long-term and short-term loans, which must be repaid; and part-time student employment. Students applying for financial aid must complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). Seventy-nine percent of Wright States students receive some type of financial aid. University scholarships, based solely on academic ability, are awarded each fall. A special scholarship application must be filled out and additional credentials such as letters of recommendation may be required. Further details concerning financial aid and scholarship programs are available through the Office of Financial Aid.

The Wright State faculty has approximately 830 members, of which approximately 80 percent hold the highest degrees in their fields. More than 75 percent of classes have fewer than 50 students.

Admission Requirements

Ohio students who have graduated from an accredited high school with a college-preparatory curriculum, a 2.0 or higher high school grade point average, and at least an 18 ACT composite score or 840 SAT (math and critical reading only) score are eligible for admission at Wright State. Applications from students not meeting these requirements, or from students who hold a state-approved high school equivalency certificate, are reviewed on an individual basis.

Students applying as freshmen should submit a WSU application form, a non-refundable $30 application fee, a copy of their high school transcript, a College Preparatory Curriculum Completion form and official ACT or SAT scores.

The transfer policies among the Universitys academic divisions vary and depend on the number of transfer hours that applicants have acquired and their cumulative GPA. The Office of Admissions can provide specific requirements for each college at WSU. Transfer applicants must submit official transcripts from each college or university previously attended and must have at least a 2.0 GPA for admission to the University. The appropriate college of the University determines how a students credit is to be applied to the Wright State academic credit requirements.
