The University

Walsh University is a fully accredited, liberal arts and sciences Catholic university in North Canton, Ohio, offering fifty majors, five graduate programs, and an accelerated-degree program for working adults. With 2,700 students and a 15:1 student-faculty ratio, the University offers a very friendly, personable, and safe campus and a unique broad-based curriculum with close student-faculty interaction. Most residence halls and academic buildings on Walshs 136-acre campus are new or have been renovated within the last several years, providing state-of-the-art facilities for students. Walsh also offers generous financial aid packages to 95percent of full-time students.

Active and involved in campus and community life, more than 60percent of Walsh students participate in extracurricular programs. Students also enjoy intramural and intercollegiate sports programs that include football, baseball, soccer, and volleyball to name a few. Walshs DivisionII NAIA athletic teams have won national championships.

Walsh University was founded in 1958 by the Brothers of Christian Instruction and is accredited by the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools, the National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission, and the Commission on Accreditation in Physical Therapy Education. Walsh is a member of the Ohio College Association, the National Association of Independent Colleges and Universities, and the Association of Catholic Colleges and Universities.

In addition to its undergraduate degree programs, Walsh offers five graduate degree programs in business (M.B.A.), counseling and human development, education, physical therapy, and theology.

Location

Walsh University has a beautiful, tree-lined campus located just 3miles east of I-77 in North Canton, a safe, pleasant residential suburban community. Canton, which is about 5miles south of the Walsh campus, is a city of 84,000 that offers a wide array of cultural, recreational, and athletic activities. Home of the Professional Football Hall of Fame, the President McKinley National Memorial, and the National First Ladies Library, the city also hosts a symphony orchestra, an art museum, and a civic opera, theater guild, and ballet. A number of major companies are headquartered in Stark County, including the Hoover Company, the Timken Company, and Diebold, Inc.

Majors and Degrees

Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Science degrees are offered in the following majors: accounting (general and specialized CPA tracks), bioinformatics, biology, chemistry, clinical laboratory science, communication, computer science, corporate communication, education (early childhood, middle childhood, adolescence to young adulthood, integrated language arts, integrated mathematics teacher licensure, integrated science teacher licensure, integrated social studies teacher, intervention specialist, life science/biology teacher licensure, life science/biology and chemistry teacher licensure, and multiage physical education), English, finance, French, general business, history, international studies, management, management information systems, marketing, mathematics, nursing, philosophy/theology, physical education, political science, psychology, sociology, and Spanish.

Walsh offers preprofessional programs in dentistry, law, medicine, natural resources, optometry, physical therapy, podiatry, and veterinary science. Each is developed within the context of a regular academic major. Walshs physical therapy graduates have the option to continue their studies by entering Walshs newly accredited Doctor of Physical Therapy degree program. Students enrolled in the Universitys B.A./M.A. program can earn a bachelors degree in behavioral science and a masters degree in counseling and human development in 5 years. An affiliation with Case Western Reserve Universitys (CWRU) program in dentistry leads to a B.S. from Walsh and ultimately a D.D.S. from CWRU.

In addition, Walsh offers the Associate of Arts degree in accounting, finance, human services, liberal arts management, and marketing.

Academic Programs

The students academic program comprises courses within the liberal arts, a major field of study, and elective courses. Major course work, constituting one fourth or more of a students program of studies, is designed to help students prepare for their careers. Forty percent of a students program of studies is within the liberal arts. Elective courses, which constitute the remaining portion of a students program of studies, enable students to develop personal interests, take more courses within their major field, or enroll in additional core courses. The University encourages students to give careful thought to selecting a program of study and a major. While many students select double majors as a way to improve their career opportunities, the design of individual programs requires consultation with a faculty adviser and a division chair. To earn a bachelors degree, students must successfully complete 130 semester hours.

Designed for the academically gifted, the honors program offers challenges that lead students to achieve academic excellence. Honors students take advantage of such offerings as special seminars, independent studies, internships, and research projects.

The Universitys School for Professional Studies Program is for working adults who have earned college credits and who wish to earn their bachelors degree in an accelerated format. Classes are scheduled on nights and weekends to accommodate busy schedules.

Academic Facilities

The Walsh Library contains 130,000 volumes, 630 current periodical subscriptions on paper, thousands of online periodicals, a curriculum library, and an audiovisual collection. Databases bring many full-text articles immediately for download or print, and information technology systems enable online requests for physical delivery of material, often via rapid courier. Library staff members give introductory lectures on research techniques. The library has a quiet study room, a snack lounge, and a mini-theater.

Faculty

Walsh University fosters close working relationships between faculty members and students. Beyond classroom teaching, faculty members serve as student counselors and tutors and take on roles as advisers for student organizations. The Walsh faculty is composed of full-time, part-time, and adjunct members. The student-faculty ratio is 15:1. The majority of full-time faculty members hold Ph.D.s or terminal degrees in their respective fields.

Student Government

Walsh University Student Government provides capable, responsible student governance. Through its executive, legislative, and judicial branches, it fosters student involvement in the governance of the University, serves as a forum for student opinion, and functions as a liaison between students, faculty and staff members, and the administration. Along with the Student Affairs staff, it plans student activities and community projects.

Costs

Tuition and fees for the 200708 academic year were $18,300 plus an $18 per-credit-hour general fee. Room and board charges were approximately $6900 per year and varied by residence hall. Books and personal expenses cost an estimated $700$900 for the year. The University reserves the right to change the cost structure without notice.

Financial Aid

Walsh is dedicated to providing outstanding liberal arts education at an affordable price. The primary purpose of Walsh Universitys financial aid program is to assist deserving students who cannot otherwise meet the costs of a college education. Financial aid takes the form of scholarships, work-study awards, grants, or loans, depending upon the resources available. The University offers a number of scholarships in amounts from $1500 to full tuition, in addition to institutional need-based grants. The Alumni Association offers scholarships as well. State and federal grants and loans are available to students along with the Universitys work-study program that provides work compatible with a students academic schedule. Financial aid is awarded for one year and is renewable in subsequent years if the student shows a continuing need and maintains an appropriate academic record.

Applicants for admission may apply for financial aid by submitting the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) and the Universitys financial aid form. To allow for timely notification of financial awards, the University recommends that the FAFSA be mailed by March15 in order to receive full analysis by May1. Prospective students may obtain a FAFSA from their high school guidance counselor or from the Universitys financial aid office. The Walsh financial aid form is available from the financial aid and admissions offices of the University.

Admission Requirements

Every student seeking admission to Walsh University is reviewed individually to asses the students ability to meet the rigors of the Universitys curriculum. The average academic credentials of the fall of 2006 freshman class were a cumulative grade point average of 3.28 and a composite ACT score of 21.6. The composition of high school classes, grades achieved, class rank, and standardized test scores are all taken into consideration before an admission decision is rendered. Essays and interviews are highly recommended but not required.

Walsh grants credit for college-level work completed in high school and for credits earned through the College Level Examination Program. Qualified high school juniors and seniors may enroll for college credit under the Universitys postsecondary enrollment program. The University seeks a diverse student body.
