The College

Vaughn College of Aeronautics and Technology is a private, four-year college committed to providing its students with the excellent education and skills needed to achieve professional success in engineering, technology, management, and aviation. Founded in 1932, the College, adjacent to LaGuardia Airport, is a small, high-quality institution where students can experience personal attention as they progress through their academic course work. The College fosters a culture of excellence in which rigorous degree, professional, technical, and certification programs are offered. These programs, built upon the Colleges aeronautical heritage, incorporate the latest technology and meet the universal needs of the industries they serve. The result is well-educated graduates who are successful in their fields. The Colleges student body of nearly 1,200 and its low 11:1 student-faculty ratio ensure a highly personalized learning environment. More than 93percent of Vaughn College graduates are employed within six months of obtaining their degrees, and they work in twenty countries and in all fifty states.

On September1, 2004, the College of Aeronautics became Vaughn College of Aeronautics and Technology. The name reflects the Colleges aviation heritage as well as its future as a greatly expanded academic institution, with new programs to include a Bachelor of Science in mechatronic engineering in fall2006 and a masters-level management offering in fall2007. The name change is part of the Colleges five-year strategic plan and includes plans for a new library, a residence hall, additional degree programs, and other improvements to the campus.

Location

Located in New York City, the College offers numerous internship opportunities with a vast array of technology, manufacturing, and aviation companies. The cultural, spiritual, and physical needs of the students are met by the outstanding facilities of New York City. Restaurants are easily accessible, and hospitals and other medical facilities are among the best in the world. Various museums focus on arts, natural history, science, and world civilization.

Majors and Degrees

The College awards the Associate of Applied Science (A.A.S.) degree in aeronautical engineering technology, airport management, aviation maintenance, computerized design and animated graphics, electronic engineering technologyavionics, and flight.

The Bachelor of Science (B.S.) degree is available general management, airline management, airport management, aviation maintenance, aviation maintenance management, electronic engineering technologyavionics, electronic technologygeneral electronics, electronic technologyoptical communications (fiber optics), flight, mechatronics engineering, mechanical engineering technologyaeronautical option, and mechanical engineering technologycomputer-aided design option. A nondegree course of study in air traffic control, a Federal Aviation Administration Collegiate Training Initiative program, is also available. The College is one of thirteen institutions nationwide to offer this program.

Academic Programs

All students in associate and baccalaureate degree programs complete a core curriculum as part of their degree requirements. The core curriculum is derived from the mission of the College and reflects what the institution believes is important and elemental to students education and development. In general, the core instills in students critical-thinking skills, values appropriate to an educated person, and the ability to communicate, and the curriculum provides context for advanced learning. The baccalaureate core consists of three componentsacademic skills (13 credits, including a year of English composition, a course in oral communication, and precalculus), the liberal arts (12 credits, including a year of world and American literature), and math and science (15credits).

Off-Campus Programs

Internships are an important part of a students learning experience at Vaughn College, and they often lead to job offers upon graduation. The Office of Career Development and faculty chair members arrange for internships with top U.S. corporations. As a Hispanic-serving institution, the College participates with the Hispanic Association of Colleges and Universities (HACU) to place students in internships with various federal agencies year-round. Some of the other active internships and cooperatives include the Boeing Company, Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), Federal Express, Global Air Dispatch, HACU, jetBlue, Lockheed Martin, the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA), the National Broadcasting Company, the Northrop Grumman Corporation, Northwest Airlines, ORBIS, the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, and Teterboro Airport.

Academic Facilities

Each laboratory provides the work/study environment suited to the requirements of each program. Students experience the technology that they will ultimately use once employed. This practical, hands-on experience helps qualify students for immediate employment upon graduation. From the new photonics laboratory to the CATIA/NASTRAN computer center, the Colleges faculty members are committed to providing students with the knowledge and tools they are likely to find in todays businesses. The FRASCA 142 flight simulator is a major component of the flight students on campus.

Over the last several years, the College has installed a $1-million computer network, which allows a common interface for a number of operating systems, including Novell and Microsoft Windows. The system also supports other operating systems, including Windows NT, Windows 2000, Windows 2003, Windows XP, Macintosh OSX, and UNIX as well as all of the previous server versions of Windows Operating Systems. More than 200 computers are connected through fiber-optic cables to allow sharing of more than thirty of the most up-to-date applications, including desktop publishing, CATIA, Autocad, Mechanical Desktop, mathematics, word processing, spread sheets, databases, shared print services, and file and scanning services. Two T1 lines give each workstation access to the Internet and full e-mail and messaging services on and off campus. The Colleges library offers extensive general, technical, resource, and periodical material totaling more than 42,000 volumes. The real and virtual resources include books, periodicals, videos, and research databases. There are more than 150 periodical titles in the librarys collection. The video collection consists of subject videos to support the Colleges curriculum, general interest videos, and movies. The library houses almost 2,000 VHS tapes and DVDs. In addition, there are research databases available that contain more than 8,000 full-text periodicals and newspapers. Ten personal computers are available for student use in the reference area. The library, which occupies more than 4,500 square feet, offers seating for 100 students and has an attached computer lab with twenty computer stations.

Costs

In 200708, full-time tuition (12 to 18 credits per semester) was $7350. Students taking fewer than 11credits paid $500 per credit. The semester fee, which covers the cost of orientation courses, Internet and computer usage, and student-support services, activities, and leadership programs, was $140.

For the 200708 academic year, rooms in Vaughns new residence hall were $3750 for a double room and $4300 for a single room, per semester. A $250 housing deposit is required. Residents live in either a two-person or four-person suite with a semi-private bath. The residence hall has laundry, study, and kitchen facilities in a common area within the building. Residence hall rooms are supplied with a bed, dresser, closet, desk, chair, and wastebasket for each student. Each room is also equipped with a phone, cable TV hookup, and computer port.

Financial Aid

Vaughn College of Aeronautics and Technology offers federal, state, and institutional funds to help students pay for their education. More than 85 percent of students are eligible for some type of financial aid. The first step is to file the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) and, if appropriate, the New York State Tuition Assistance Program (TAP) application. Applications for the fall semester should be filed by March1. The College recognizes academic excellence by awarding scholarships to high-achieving students pursuing Bachelor of Science degree programs. In order to be eligible, all applicants must file the FAFSA.

Awards for new students include Founders Scholarships, which are merit-based and range between $500 to $6000 per year; the Vaughn College financial grants, which are awarded based on need and range from $250 to $2200; and the National Science Foundations Computer Science, Engineering, and Mathematics Scholarships (CSEMS), which provide up to $3125 per academic year for students majoring in mechanical or electronic engineering technology.

Faculty

What separates Vaughn College of Aeronautics and Technology from other institutions is its uniquely committed faculty, whose members come to the classroom with extensive experience in such fields as engineering, manufacturing, management, and communications. Working closely with industry, the College has developed rigorous curricula that incorporate the latest technology and the knowledge students need for that all-important first professional position. The small student-faculty ratio of 11:1 enables students to work closely with faculty members in the classroom and laboratory settings.

The Student Government Association (SGA) is primarily concerned with the quality of student life on campus. SGA carries the concerns of its constituency, the student body, to the administration and is the voice of the student body. Serving students as the liaison to the administration, SGA coordinates social programming and provides a system for cocurricular involvement through many clubs and organizations. SGA meets on a regular basis and encourages all students to attend meetings and become involved.

Admission Requirements

High school graduates must submit the completed application; the $40 application fee; SAT or ACT scores; an official copy of the high school transcript and any college transcripts (if applicable); a copy of the high school diploma (or GED), complete with scores; and immunizations records. Some students may need to take a placement exam, while flight operations applicants must pass the FAA ClassII physical examination. An interview with an admissions counselor and a financial aid counselor is required for all flight operations applicants and recommended for all others.

Students who have lived in the United States for less than three years and for whom English is a second language, or international applicants from countries where English is not an official language, may substitute results of the TOEFL exam. Students who have completed 24 or more college credits are exempt from the SAT/ACT requirement.
