The University
The University of Houstons (UH) main campus, a leading institution in the state-assisted system of higher education in Texas, stands on the forefront of education, research, and service. The largest and most comprehensive component of the University of Houston System, the UH main campus serves more than 35,000 students in twelve colleges and the Honors College, offering more than 300 undergraduate, graduate, and special professional degrees.
UH conducts research in each academic department, operating more than forty research centers and institutes on campus. Through these facilities, the University maintains creative partnerships with government and private industry. The research conducted breaks new ground in such vital areas as superconductivity, space commercialization, chemical engineering, economics, and education. The Universitys advanced professional programs include architecture, law, pharmacy, and optometry.
In 2007, sponsored research was at $86 million, an increase of 10 percent over the previous year. Considering its commitment to excellence, the University anticipates continued support and growth in grants and awards.
Outstanding faculty members and facilities draw students from 126 nations. As a result, UH is characterized by a rich mix of cultural backgrounds in a student body that is 37.5 percent white, 19.6 percent Asian/Pacific Islander, 19.4 percent Hispanic, 13.2 percent African American, 68.1 percent international students who represent countries across the globe, and .3 percent Native American.
University of Houston public service and community activities, such as cultural offerings, clinical services, policy studies, and small-business initiatives, serve a diverse metropolitan population. Likewise, the resources of the Gulf Coast region complement and enrich the Universitys academic programs, providing students with professional expertise, practical experience, and career opportunities and allowing them to secure career-level jobs soon after graduation.
Location
Located just minutes from downtown Houston on Interstate 45, the University is set on 557 acres of parks, fountains, plazas, sculptures, and recreational fields surrounding more than ninety modern facilities. This offers students a comfortable and well-equipped setting for academic pursuits and proximity to the resources of the nations fourth-largest city.
