The Institute

The New England Institute of Art prepares graduates for entry-level employment in the creative arts.Industry-experienced faculty members use a student-centered approach and market-driven curricula to support students in developing tools and skills consistent with industry needs. The New England Institute of Art offers eight bachelors degree programs as well as three associate degree programs. Continuing education is available through the Center for Professional Development at The New England Institute of Art.

Students at The New England Institute of Art come from throughout the United States and abroad. The student population includes recent high school graduates, transfer students, and those who have left a previous employment situation to study and train for a new career. Students are creative, competitive, and open to new ideas. They place great value on an education that prepares them for an exciting entry-level position in the arts.

Assistance is available to help students with resume writing, networking, and keeping abreast of what employers are looking for in job candidates. The Student Affairs and Career Services departments provide extensive individual services and classroom instruction in areas such as career counseling, job-search assistance, and personal counseling.

Students have many opportunities to participate in student organizations, including an on-campus radio station, record label, literary magazine, and Web development program. School groups include the Audio Engineering Society; Naked Ear Records, the schools record label; Naked Truth, the schools literary magazine; and Naked Eye Video, the schools production company. The Web Raisers group helps nonprofit organizations establish an online presence, and the Graphic Design Club gives students the opportunity to work on pro bono and freelance projects outside of the classroom.

Students may live in Domitilla Hall at Regis College, located in Weston, 11 miles from The New England Institute of Art. Domitilla Hall has double and single dorm-style bedrooms and laundry facilities, lounge/study areas, and floor kitchenettes. Free shuttle service is available for students between the residence hall and The New England Institute of Art. The school also assists students seeking independent housing in the area by providing roommate referrals and rental information.

The New England Institute of Art is accredited by the New England Association of Schools and Colleges (NEASC) through its Commission on Institutions of Higher Education (CIHE).

Location

The New England Institute of Art is situated in the greater Bostonarea city of Brookline, a blend of busy city streets and rolling countryside. The town features upscale shops and small pubs, a hillside park overlooking Boston with an open-air skating rink, a golf course, and Brooklines very own working farm.

Major retail centers such as Coolidge Corner and Brookline Village contain bookstores, coffee shops, food markets, antique stores, and much more. The New England Institute of Art students find Brookline to be convenient to Bostons radio and television stations, ad agencies, and media production companies.

Majors and Degrees

The school offers bachelors degree programs in advertising, audio and media technology, digital filmmaking and video production, graphic design, interactive media design, interior design, media arts and animation, and photography. Associate degree programs are available in audio production, broadcasting, and photography.

Academic Programs

The academic year is divided into fall, spring, and summer semesters, beginning in September, January, and May. To receive a bachelors degree, students must complete a minimum of 120 to 123 credit hours and complete a 120-hour internship or capstone project. To receive an associate degree, students must complete a minimum of 61 credit hours and complete an 80-hour internship or capstone project.

Academic Facilities

The New England Institute of Art facilities house computer labs with industry-related software. The schools library has a collection of communications and design-related books, career-related periodicals, videotapes, computers, and CDs.

Access to production and recording studios is an essential component of the educational process at The New England Institute of Art. The school emphasizes consistent and regular student access beyond the scheduled class hours to all studios. Studio operations personnel are available to assist students during access periods.

Classrooms reserved for radio courses contain reel-to-reel recorder editors, cart machines, a turntable, and cassette recorders. Audio Production Department facilities include music and audio production studios, including digital postproduction studios and a computer music lab. The New England Institute of Art operates a multicamera television studio where students may learn all facets of studio production, including directing, camera operation, lighting, audio, editing, switching, and on-camera performance as well as producing and script writing.

Costs

Tuition cost varies by program. Prospective students should contact the school for current tuition costs. Other charges include a starting kit for all first-quarter students. Kits vary in price, depending on the program of study.

Financial Aid

Financial aid is available for those who qualify. Students who require financial assistance to attend the school should make an appointment with a financial aid officer, who will determine the level of need according to a standard federal formula and cost of attendance. Students must submit a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) in order to receive federal and state aid, which is available in the form of grants, loans, or work-study. Grants include Federal Pell Grants, Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grants, Massachusetts State Grants, and veterans benefits. Loans include Federal Stafford Student Loans, Federal PLUS loans, and Massachusetts State Loans. The Inabeth Miller Scholarship awards half-tuition scholarships to two applicants who meet Scholarship Committee criteria. Other scholarships may be available from the school or private sources. Application deadlines and eligibility requirements vary.

The New England Institute of Art faculty consists of full-time and part-time professors, many of whom have advanced degrees and professional experience in their respective fields.

Admission Requirements

Individuals seeking admission to The New England Institute of Art must have earned a high school diploma or a General Educational Development (GED) certificate. Applications must include an official high school transcript and SAT or ACT scores. Candidates for admission are required to participate in an admission interview to discuss reasons for seeking admission, program preference, and professional and educational objectives. Applications may be submitted anytime prior to the beginning of a new semester.

There is a $50 application fee.
