The College

The State University of New York Institute of Technology (SUNYIT) offers undergraduate degree programs in technology, professional studies, and the liberal arts. SUNYITs broad curriculum embraces the humanities, communications, math, and science. Students enjoy close contact with faculty members in small classes, many with fewer than 20 students.

Founded as an upper-division and graduate institution in 1966, SUNYIT offers twenty bachelors degree programs for freshmen and undergraduate transfer students and thirteen graduate degrees, including the Master of Business Administration in technology management.

SUNYIT enrolled 2,210 undergraduate and 618 graduate students on both a full-time and part-time basis in fall 2007. The men-women ratio was approximately 1:1. Approximately 3 percent were international students, and 11percent of students were members of minority groups.

In addition to its academic facilities, SUNYIT provides student services through the Campus Life, Career Services, Health, and Counseling Center Offices. Town-house-style residence halls provide on-campus housing to 584 students. The Campus Center provides health, physical education, and recreation facilities as well as a dining hall and student services offices. In addition to providing a wide variety of intramural sports for students, SUNYIT has competitive intercollegiate teams in mens and womens basketball, bowling, cross-country, golf, and soccer; mens baseball; and womens softball and volleyball.

Location

SUNYIT is located in Marcy, New York, a few minutes from Utica. The city of Utica, which has a population of 60,000, is situated in the geographic center of New York State, approximately 220 miles from New York City and 190 miles from Buffalo on the New York State Thruway. Utica, a cultural and recreational center for this area of New York State, has a variety of recreational and educational opportunities. Museums, theaters, restaurants, and professional sports events are available either within walking distance of the campus or a short bus ride away. As a natural gateway to the Adirondack Mountains, Utica provides its residents with access to hiking, boating, skiing, and other outdoor activities. Served by buses, Amtrak, and airlines, the city is easily reached from locations throughout the eastern United States.

Majors and Degrees

SUNYIT awards the following baccalaureate degrees: Bachelor of Professional Studies (B.P.S.), Bachelor of Science (B.S.), Bachelor of Arts (B.A.), and Bachelor of Business Administration (B.B.A.).

Academic majors available to undergraduate students include accounting, applied mathematics, business administration, civil engineering technology, communication and information design, computer and information science, computer engineering technology, computer information systems, criminal justice, electrical engineering, electrical engineering technology, finance, general studies, health-information management, health services management, industrial engineering technology, mechanical engineering technology, nursing, psychology, sociology, and telecommunications.

A number of options and concentrations within specific curricula are also available, as are minors in accounting; anthropology; communication and information design; computer science; economics; finance; gerontology; health services management; manufacturing/quality assurance technology; mathematics; physics; psychology; science, technology, and society; and sociology.

Academic Programs

SUNYITs academic year is divided into two semesters and runs from Septemberthrough May. Summer sessions are also available.

Baccalaureate degree requirements vary from program to program but usually consist of a combination of specific major courses and liberal arts studies. Specializations and other options exist within the Schools of Arts and Sciences, Business, Information Systems and Engineering Technology, and Nursing and Health Systems. Specializations are developed through the use of electives and individual advisement.

Off-Campus Programs

Internship and cooperative education experiences are integral to effective career planning and job search strategies. These experiences can influence career plans by providing an opportunity for occupational exploration, developing marketable career-related skills and characteristics, and establishing a network of contacts that can provide relevant and timely information critical to the career decision-making process. In addition, employers are increasingly using internships and cooperative education programs as training opportunities leading to full-time permanent employment. All students, regardless of major, are encouraged to consider gaining experience in their chosen field that complements classroom learning. Academic Facilities

SUNYITs academic facilities are located on its scenic 800-acre campus just north of the city of Utica, easily accessible by municipal bus service. The campus consists of four building complexes, a facilities building, and residence halls. Construction is planned for two new buildings: a $20-million sports complex and a $13-million student center.

Dedicated in 2003, the $14-million Peter J. Cayan Library comprises 68,000 square feet of space, group and individual study rooms, and an advanced computerized library instruction room.

Kunsela Hall contains administrative offices, classrooms, a bookstore, and laboratories for the telecommunications, electrical engineering, electrical engineering technology, and computer science programs. Donovan Hallthe academic complexhouses classrooms, faculty offices, and laboratory facilities for all other programs, including business, industrial engineering technology, mechanical engineering technology, health services management, nursing, and arts and sciences. The Campus Center contains a cafeteria, gymnasium, recreational facilities, student services offices, a swimming pool, and meeting rooms for clubs, special activities, and student government.

Costs

Costs for the 200708 academic year included state resident tuition and fees of $5405 and out-of-state tuition and fees of $11,665. Room and board costs were $7950, and personal expenses, books, supplies, and travel cost approximately $2820. The total expenses were about $16,175 for New York State residents and $22,435 for out-of-state students. Costs may be subject to change.

Financial Aid

A wide variety of financial aid is available to students at SUNYIT. All financial aid is awarded on the basis of need, as determined by an assessment of the Free Application for Federal Student Aid. At present, approximately 85percent of the students receive financial assistance. The forms of financial aid available include Tuition Assistance Program awards (for New York State residents only), Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grants, Federal Pell Grants, Federal Work-Study Program employment, Federal Perkins Loans, federal Nursing Student Loans, Federal Direct Student Loans, a variety of state-sponsored loans, and a broad range of private scholarships and grants. Students with a GPA of 3.25 or better or a high school average of 90 are automatically considered for merit scholarships at the time of their application.

Faculty

SUNYIT faculty members come from all over the world and are committed to teaching, research, and service to the community. Among the faculty members are a Distinguished Service Professor, a Fulbright Scholar, and numerous recipients of the Chancellors Award for Excellence in Teaching. More than 80percent of SUNYITs full-time faculty members have doctoral or terminal degrees. The faculty members are fully engaged in academic orientation and advisement, individualized instruction, cooperative faculty-student efforts in research projects, and concern for students as individuals. In the classroom, the average student-faculty ratio is 19:1.

Student Government

All full-time undergraduates are members of the SUNYIT Student Association. Its primary functions are to develop and monitor the student-activity-fee budget, to approve and oversee all student organizations, to debate issues of concern to students and take action as needed, and to develop programs of interest to all students. Student government consists of a 7-person executive committee and 11 senators. Students are encouraged to take an active role in the governance process, and many opportunities for involvement, in addition to those listed above, are available for interested students.

Admission Requirements

Generally, freshman applicants should carry a B/B+ average in a college-preparatory program and have achieved an SAT score in the 10001100 range (or approximately 2224 composite ACT score). Admission is based on high school average, SAT or ACT scores, strength of course work, and other relevant information.

For transfer students, most programs require a minimum GPA of 2.5 for guaranteed admission. Transfer students below a 2.5 GPA but above a 2.0 GPA may be required to participate in an interview. Transfer students are required to furnish an official transcript from all previous colleges they attended.

Students with a cumulative GPA of at least 3.25 are automatically considered for merit and residential scholarships; no separate application is required.
