The University

SUNY Fredonia is a selective, public, comprehensive, liberal arts university located near Lake Erie in beautiful Western New York. Founded in 1826, Fredonia is a highly respected liberal arts institution with recognized programs in business, communications, education, the fine and performing arts, science, and the social sciences. The University maintains a traditional small-college atmosphere, and students enjoy a variety of cultural and social activities. Many of the 5,085 undergraduate students participate actively in clubs, organizations, athletics, and intramural sports.

Fredonias 240-acre campus has twenty-nine buildings. A modern field house provides facilities for ice hockey, swimming, diving, and indoor track and includes a large gymnasium. A second facility contains a fitness center, a dance studio, and two intramural gymnasiums. Fourteen residence halls house 2,600 students and offer accommodations to suit a variety of lifestyles, including traditional, coed, and apartment-style residence halls. On-campus housing is guaranteed for all undergraduates. University Commons is a state-of-the-art facility that includes a dining center, bookstore, Starbucks, and residence hall.

Location

The village of Fredonia is located 45 miles south of Buffalo near Lake Erie and is home to 11,000 residents. The village has preserved its traditional small-town atmosphere. Tree-lined streets lead to a spacious downtown common surrounded by outstanding examples of nineteenth-century village architecture. Fredonia is surrounded by orchards and vineyards leading south to the Allegheny foothills. Summer and winter recreational facilities abound. The University benefits from its relative proximity to Buffalo, Toronto, Cleveland, and Pittsburgh.

Majors and Degrees

SUNY Fredonia degrees and program offerings include the Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) degree in applied music, art history, ceramics, communication disorders, criminal justice, drawing, earth science, economics, English, French, graphic design, history, illustration, interdisciplinary studies, painting, philosophy, photography, political science, psychology, sculpture, sociology, Spanish, and theater. A Bachelor of Fine Arts (B.F.A.) degree is offered in acting, animation and illustration, ceramics, dance, drawing, graphic design, media arts, musical theater, painting, photography, production design, and sculpture. The Bachelor of Music (Mus.B.) degree is available in composition, music education, and performance. The Bachelor of Science (B.S.) degree is awarded in accounting, audio/radio production, biochemistry, biology, business administration, chemistry, communication disorders, computer and information sciences, finance, geochemistry, geology, geophysics, industrial management, interdisciplinary studies, management, management information systems, marketing, mathematics, mathematics-physics, media management, medical technology, molecular genetics, music therapy, physics, public relations, social work, sound recording technology, and TV/digital film production. A Bachelor of Science in Education (B.S.Ed.) degree is offered with majors in childhood education, early childhood education, and inclusive education. Adolescent education certification is available in biology, chemistry, earth science, English, French, mathematics, physics, social studies, and Spanish.

The Interdisciplinary Studies degree gives students the opportunity to design an individualized interdisciplinary major with guidance from experienced faculty members. Students in these programs work toward a Bachelor of Arts or Bachelor of Science degree. The Interdisciplinary Studies option also offers model majors and minors in such areas as African American studies, American studies, arts administration, environmental sciences, exercise studies, geographic information systems, legal studies, multiethnic studies, music business, sport management and exercise science, and womens studies.

Fredonia takes part in a cooperative 3-2 engineering program with the following institutions: Alfred University, Case Western Reserve, Clarkson, Columbia, Cornell, Louisiana Tech, Ohio State, Penn State Behrend, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, Rochester Institute of Technology, SUNY Binghamton, SUNY Buffalo, Syracuse, and Tri-State University. The Department of Business Administration offers an accelerated M.B.A. program, including a 3-2 program with SUNY at Binghamton and SUNY at Buffalo and a 4-1 program with Clarkson and the University of Pittsburgh.

Academic Programs

The bachelors degree requires 120 credit hours, including a general education component, and there are opportunities for double majors, minors, and concentrations. The University offers an honors program for academically talented students. Up to 30 credits may be awarded through Advanced Placement, CLEP, and International Baccalaureate examinations.

Fredonia operates on a semester system with the fall term beginning in late August and ending in mid-December. The spring term begins the third week of January and continues into May. A summer program of two 5-week sessions is available.

Retention and graduation rates of entering freshmen at Fredonia are among the highest in the nation. To ensure continued success, the University has implemented Fredonia in 4, a program for first-time freshmen that stipulates that the University pledges to adhere to an agreement wherein it provides the necessary courses and academic advising to ensure that a student graduates in four years provided that the student successfully completes the courses recommended by his or her adviser.

Off-Campus Programs

Fredonia students enjoy opportunities to study abroad through SUNYs expansive overseas education program. Students may take part in opportunities throughout the world in virtually every discipline. The University offers internships in courts and government agencies as well as in the areas of public relations, psychology, journalism, television production, radio, business, and the health sciences.

Academic Facilities

Fredonias academic buildings host an array of up-to-date teaching and research facilities. Students have wireless connections throughout campus and Ethernet connections in their residence hall rooms. A 1,200-seat concert hall and a new 500-seat recital hall support excellent performing arts programs. The Rockefeller Arts Center provides outstanding facilities for concert and theatrical productions and houses art galleries, art studios, and classrooms.

Costs

Tuition and fees for 200708 are estimated at $5532 per year for New York State residents and $11,792 for nonNew York State residents. Students living in residence halls pay an additional fee of $5050 for room, and meal plans range from $2800 to $3400.

Financial Aid

More than 84 percent of Fredonias undergraduates received financial assistance in 200607. The average award, consisting of grants, scholarships, loans, and campus jobs, was $9200. Students who are interested in applying for aid are encouraged to submit the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) by February1. Sources of aid include Federal Pell Grants, Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grants, New York State Tuition Assistance Program awards, Educational Opportunity Grants, Federal Academic Competitive Grants, Federal Smart Grants, Federal Perkins Loans, Federal Stafford Student Loans, Federal Work-Study Program awards, on- and off-campus jobs, and Fredonia University Scholarships, including a freshman merit scholarship program.

Faculty

Fredonias faculty includes 245 full-time and 160 part-time instructional staff members. Ninety percent of faculty members have earned doctorates or terminal degrees in their field. All professors have weekly office hours during which they are available to students. Faculty members are involved in instruction, research, publication, and academic advising. Small class size contributes to excellent faculty-student interaction; the average class size is 22 students.

Student Government

All students are members of the Student Association, which functions through elected officers and elected senators from the various University groups and organizations. Student representatives are voting members of the Faculty Council and are represented on most committees of the University. The Student Association provides funding for 120 campus organizations and clubs.

Admission Requirements

Admission to Fredonia is competitive. Particular attention is given to the quality of the academic program and the high school average. Other factors considered in the admissions process include SAT or ACT scores, recommendations, rank in class, and extracurricular activities. Applicants should have completed at least 16 units in core academic subjects. Those seeking admission to math- or science-related majors should include 4 units each of mathematics and science; those seeking admission to programs in business administration and accounting should include 4 units of college-preparatory mathematics. An audition is required for admission to programs in acting, dance, music, musical theater, and production design. A portfolio is required for admission to visual arts and new media majors. A campus visit is recommended; a personal interview is not required.

New York State residents may obtain paper applications from their high school guidance offices or any SUNY campus. Nonresidents should contact the Office of Admissions. Application review and notification are made on a rolling basis. Applicants may seek admission through the Early Decision Program. A deposit of $100, due May1, is required to reserve a space in the entering class.
