The University

St. Bonaventure University provides a values-based, Franciscan liberal arts education with individual attention from professors, a beautiful residential setting, and a friendly, close-knit atmosphere. Of the 2,600 students enrolled, 2,000 are undergraduates. More than 74 percent of the undergraduates are full-time residents. Complementing St. Bonaventures traditions are innovative degree programs, computerized career placement aids, comprehensive student life activities, and modern academic facilities. Among major campus events during the academic year are concerts and coffeehouse acts, indoor and outdoor recreational programs, current and classic film offerings, and dramatic and musical plays. Aspiring writers and broadcasters from all academic majorsBonaventure has produced 5 Pulitzer Prize winnersfind challenging and plentiful opportunities working with one of the four University media: WSBU-88.3 FM-The Buzz, the nationally ranked campus radio station; The Bona Venture, the award-winning weekly newspaper; The Bonadieu, the yearbook; and The Laurel, the nations oldest student literary publication, which marked its 100th anniversary in 1999. Other organizations on campus include academic fraternities, academic honor societies, a variety of club and intramural sports, and arts organizations that include choral, instrumental, dance, and drama ensembles. The Thomas Merton Ministry Center is open 24 hours a day and aims to foster a community of friendship and mutual service. Many students take the opportunity to serve as Bona Buddies to area children or senior citizens; help with the national awardwinning soup kitchen The Warming House, which is the oldest student-run soup kitchen in the nation; or volunteer in other service organizations. Volunteer opportunities expanded with the opening of St. Bonaventures Franciscan Center for Social Concern, which offers immersion experiences and service opportunities with the poor.

St. Bonaventure University students enjoy two athletic facilities: the new $6.2-million Richter Center, which is open 24 hours a day, features three basketball courts, a running/walking track, racquetball/squash/wallyball courts, an aerobics room, a recreational area for roller hockey, a weight room, a cardiovascular fitness room, locker rooms, an equipment check-out, a reception area, and a climbing wall; and the Reilly Center, housing a 6,000-seat sports arena, swimming pool, and weight room. Also available are outdoor tennis and basketball courts and a nine-hole golf course. NCAA Division I athletics for men are baseball, basketball, cross-country, golf, soccer, swimming, and tennis. Division I competition for women includes basketball, cross-country, lacrosse, soccer, softball, swimming, and tennis.

In addition to its undergraduate programs, St. Bonaventure offers the Master of Arts degree in English and in Franciscan studies. A Master of Science is offered in professional leadership, while a Master of Science in Education program includes adolescence education, advanced inclusive processes, counselor education, differentiated instruction, educational leadership, literacy, school building leader, school district leader, and supervision and curriculum. A Master of Business Administration degree program is available with concentrations in accounting/finance, general business, international business, and management/marketing, and a Master of Arts degree in integrated marketing communications was added in 2003.

An automated online card catalog greatly improves research capabilities.

A $13-million science center addition is planned for DeLaRoche Hall in 2008; it currently houses equipment for instruction and research in a variety of fields, including chemistry, geology, mathematics, microbiology, physics, and psychology. Research facilities include an atomic absorption spectrophotometer, a tissue-culture laboratory, a greenhouse, a radioactivity laboratory, equipment for research in the growth of microorganisms, and an extensive mammal collection.

The John J. Murphy Professional Building provides the most up-to-date equipment for the School of Business and the School of Journalism and Mass Communication. The Bob Koop Broadcast Journalism Laboratory features a television studio with an anchor desk, digital and videotape editing bays, while the building also houses offices, classrooms, and a 432-seat auditorium. A fiber-optic network connects microcomputers in academic and administrative areas. There are seven labs for student use containing more than 100 DOS and Macintosh systems. St. Bonaventure students also have access to the Internet via every residence hall.

An annex to Plassmann Hall houses computer-adaptable education classrooms, seminar rooms, and offices for the education faculty. An observatory allows students access to three compact telescopes, two 8-inch Celestron telescopes, and one 11-inch Schmidt-Cassegrain telescope, along with a heated classroom.

The Regina A. Quick Center for the Arts provides acoustically designed classroom space for music courses and painting and drawing studios for students enrolled in visual arts classes. The center also includes a musical instrument digital interface lab, a 325-seat theater, and an atrium that is often used for poetry readings and impromptu musical performances. The F.Donald Kenney Museum and Art Study Wing includes four climate-controlled galleries offering nationally acclaimed traveling exhibits, works from the Universitys permanent collections, and student exhibits.
