The University

Siena Heights University (SHU) was founded in 1919 by the Adrian Dominican Congregation as a Catholic liberal arts college. The name Siena honors Saint Catherine of Siena, a fourteenth-century Italian Dominican who dedicated her life to a quest for truth and social responsibility. Similarly, the mission of the Universityto help students become more competent, purposeful, and ethical through a teaching and learning environment that respects the dignity of allgrows out of the philosophy of life exemplified in Saint Catherine of Siena.

Throughout its history, Siena Heights University has built a proud tradition of innovative response to challenging social needs. Originally a university for women who intended to become teachers, Siena broadened its offerings over the years and by the 1950s was recognized as one of the nations ten best liberal arts colleges for women. Today, Siena continues to be a leading innovator in delivery of educational programs, offering traditional four-year bachelors degree programs requiring 120 credits.

The mission of Siena Heights University is to assist students to become more competent, purposeful, and ethical through a teaching and learning environment that respects the dignity of all. The University therefore provides an educational process that challenges individuals to identify, to refine, and to achieve their personal goals. Through this process, Siena Heights University expects to engage each of its students in the development of a personal philosophy of life.

The University is accredited by the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools, the Department of Education of the state of Michigan, and the National Association of Schools of Art and Design and is organized into five departments: Business and Management; Computing, Mathematics and the Sciences; Humanities; Fine and Performing Arts and Education; and the Social Sciences.

Siena Heights University accommodates 425 students on campus. Hundreds of students live off campus within walking or biking distance. Students also commute from surrounding cities.

The Universitys Career Planning and Placement Center provides students with excellent placement services. Supported by state-of-the-art technology, the University has a 98 percent placement rate among its students within six months of graduation.

The Fieldhouse, home to the Saints athletics programs, has five basketball courts, four volleyball courts, two indoor tennis courts, a 200-meter running track, and a training room. Recently, the University completed $1.7 million of renovations on more than 10,000 square feet of space, including completion of a state-of-the-art fitness center with equipment for use by the entire Siena community. Outdoor facilities on campus include a soccer field, baseball fields, two tennis courts, a sand volleyball court, and a softball complex.

Siena Heights University is proud of the accomplishments of its student athletes both in intercollegiate competition and in the classroom. The Saints have won three straight Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference (WHAC) All-Sports competitions. Since 1985, Siena Heights athletic teams have won several conference, district, and regional championships, making SHU one of the finest athletic programs of its size in the nation.

The Saints have produced 62 NAIA All-Americans and 48 All-American Scholar-Athletes over the past two decades. The mens basketball team has advanced to the NAIA National Championship Tournament six times in the past eight years, and the 1997 team went 307 and was the national runner-up. In 1995, the mens baseball team became only the third NAIA institution in the state of Michigan to qualify for the NAIA World Series, and the womens soccer team has competed in three NAIA national championship tournaments in its twelve-year history.

More than thirty-five student clubs and organizations are available on the campus. They range from national social organizations to choirs, from Student Senate to intramural sports, and from international student organizations to various honor societies.

In addition to associate and bachelors degree programs, Siena Heights offers later afternoon and evening graduate courses that lead to the Master of Arts degree.

Location

Siena Heights University is located in Adrian (population 22,000), which serves as the hub of the Lenawee County area. The campus is 75 miles from the Detroit metropolitan area, 30 miles from Ann Arbor, and 30 miles from Toledo, Ohio.

Majors and Degrees

Siena offers Associate of Arts, Associate of Science, Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Fine Arts, Bachelor of Science, Bachelor of Social Work, Bachelor of Business Administration, and Bachelor of Applied Science degrees.

The majors offered are accounting; art (ceramics, drawing, graphics, metalsmithing, painting, photography, printmaking, sculpture, watercolor); biology (premedical studies); business administration, with concentrations in accounting, computer information systems, finance, international business, management, and marketing; chemistry; child development; community services; computer and information systems; criminal justice; English (communications, creative writing, English general); environmental science; gerontology; history; humanities; human services administration; integrated science; language arts; mathematics (preactuarial studies); multidisciplinary studies; nursing (RNB.S.N.); prelaw studies; philosophy; preprofessional science (dentistry, pharmacy, engineering, veterinary science); professional communication; psychology; public services administration; religious studies; social science; social studies education; social work; Spanish; special education; sport management; theater/musical theater; theater/speech communications; and special majors, such as a contracted major and inverted major. A nondegree teacher certification program is also available.

Academic Programs

The academic calendar consists of two semesters; a summer session is available. In a typical baccalaureate program, 120 credit hours are required.

Off-Campus Programs

There are internships in all majors. The cooperative education program allows freshmen and sophomores to test potential career fields while giving upperclass students on-the-job training. The international study program sends students to Florence, Italy; Paris, France; and Mexico.

Academic Facilities

The 140,000-volume library includes a computerized card catalog, automated circulation and book reserve functions, an expanded version of the academic index INFOTRAC to assist in retrieving recent periodical citations by subject, and Internet access. Information and research capabilities are available to students campuswide through the Universitys wireless computer network, which enables students to access the Internet and Siena Heights network files without plugging in to a hard-wired network connection.

Costs

For the academic year 200809, basic expenses are $18,494 for tuition and fees and $6600 for room and board, for a total of $25,094. There are no additional fees for out-of-state students. The average cost for books and supplies is approximately $500 per semester.

Financial Aid

Siena Heights University is committed to making an education affordable for every accepted student. Some form of financial assistance is given to nearly 86 percent of the Universitys full-time students. Need-based grants, loans, and work-study programs are available through the federal and state governments and the University itself. Siena Heights University also offers various academic scholarships up to $10,000 per academic year. Other awards based on leadership excellence and financial need are also available.

Students applying for financial aid should file the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) and have the results sent to Siena Heights. Applications are processed on a first-come, first-served basis only after a student has been accepted to the University.

Faculty

Siena Heights University employs more than 130 faculty members. Of the 65 full-time faculty members, more than 50 percent hold a doctorate or other terminal degree. Faculty members conduct recognized research and serve as advisers to aid in course selection and to offer career assistance.

Student Government

The Student Senate is involved with many topical issues touching all areas of University life. Students may serve in University government as elected senators or as volunteers on Student Senate committees. The Student Senate is open to all students of Siena Heights University.

Admission Requirements

Siena Heights admits students who are academically qualified, capable, enthusiastic, motivated, ready to be challenged, and ready to achieve. Admission decisions are based on high school academic performance and ACT or SAT scores. Students attending college for the first time must have a minimum high school GPA of 2.5 and an ACT composite score of 18 or higher to be eligible for regular admission. Students can submit SAT scores in place of ACT scores. Transfer students must be in good academic and personal standing at prior institutions, have a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.0 on a 4.0 scale, and have 12 or more semester hours of transferable credit. The typical profile of a regularly admitted freshman reflects an average high school GPA of 3.3 on a 4.0 scale and an average composite ACT score of 21.2. Conditional admission is available to students who show academic potential.
