In-Depth Description
Siena College

The College

Siena College is a four-year, coeducational, independent liberal arts college with a Franciscan and Catholic tradition. It is a community of 2,900 full-time students that offers undergraduate degrees in business, liberal arts, and sciences. Student-focused professors are at the heart of a supportive and challenging learning community that allows students to realize their potential and prepares them for careers and an active leadership role in their communities. Founded by the Franciscan Friars in 1937, Siena seeks to develop the potential for extraordinary achievement. It welcomes all races and creeds and prides itself on the care and concern for the intellectual, spiritual, ethical, and social growth of all students.

Approximately 80 percent of the Colleges students live on campus. Siena offers traditional residence halls, suites, and town-house units. When Siena students are not in class, they have plenty to do. More than sixty clubs and organizations are active each year. The Franciscan Center for Service and Advocacy is the Colleges primary vehicle for service with and among the poor and marginalized and offers service to Habitat for Humanity, soup kitchens, and teaching in religious education programs. More than 70 percent of the student body is involved in some type of athletic program. The College offers eighteen Division I intercollegiate sports, club teams, and intramurals. Siena also provides numerous student support services, including counseling, tutoring, health services, peer counseling, and a career center. Popular activities include the Stage III Theatre, the student newspaper, the radio station, the yearbook, the Rugby Club, the Black and Latino Student Union, and Model United Nations.

Siena Colleges Marcelle Athletic Complex features a field house with an elevated running track, racquetball and squash courts, an aerobics/dance studio, and an area with exercise and other weight-training equipment. Serra Hall, the dining hall on campus, underwent a $4.5-million renovation during the summer of 2006.

Siena provides additional learning and cultural experiences outside of its academic programs to its students and the wider community. Examples of these efforts include the Martin Luther King Jr. Lecture Series, the Niebuhr Institute of Religion and Culture, and the Sister Thea Bowman Center for Women.

Siena has developed a number of cooperative and special programs. In addition to the college-wide honors program, Siena offers a premed program with Albany Medical College; a five-year M.B.A. program with Clarkson University, Union University, and Pace University; a seven-year accelerated predental program with Boston University; a 3-2 engineering program in cooperation with Clarkson University, Catholic University, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, Manhattan College, SUNY at Binghamton, and Western New England College; and the Washington Semester at American University.

Sienas 166-acre campus is ideally located in Loudonville, a residential community 2 miles north of Albany, the capital of New York. With eighteen colleges in the area, there is a wide variety of activities off campus. The Times Union Center hosts performances by major concert artists and professional sporting events. Within 50 miles are the Adirondacks, the Berkshires, and the Catskill Mountains, providing outdoor recreation throughout the year. Montreal, New York City, and Boston are less than 3 hours away. With all of the professional, cultural, and recreational opportunities the Capital Region offers, many Siena graduates choose to begin their careers here.

Majors and Degrees

The College offers bachelors degrees in the following areas: accounting, American studies, biochemistry, biology, chemistry, classics, computational science, computer science, creative arts, economics, English, environmental studies, finance, French, history, marketing and management, mathematics, philosophy, physics, political science, psychology, religious studies, social work, sociology, and Spanish. In addition, the College offers forty-six minors and certificate programs.

Academic Programs

A strong liberal arts core forms the basis for all of Sienas programs. All students take courses within a broad core requirement: 30 hours in the humanities and social sciences (including a 6-credit freshman foundations course), 9 hours in mathematics and science (with 3 of these in a natural science), and 3 hours in creative arts. Students must also maintain a minimum cumulative index of 2.0 and earn at least a C in every major field concentration course. Within the major, students must take a minimum of 30 credits, with no more than 39 credits counting toward the degree requirements. A total of 120 hours is required to qualify for a bachelors degree.

Students may get credit for prior work by taking standardized college proficiency exams with the approval of the head of the department in the discipline to be examined. A total of 18 credits may be obtained this way. Siena offers honors courses in English, history, philosophy, and political science. ROTC affiliation is available at Siena in a U.S. Army unit, and an Air Force ROTC unit is available at a nearby college through cross-registration.

Off-Campus Programs

Siena students have the opportunity to spend a semester or a year studying abroad. Programs directly affiliated with the College include Siena at Regents College, London; the Siena in London Internship Experience; the Siena semester at the Centre dtudes Franco-Amricain de Management in Lyon, France; and the Center for Cross-Cultural Studies in Seville, Spain. In addition, programs are available for all majors everywhere on the globe. International study is typically pursued during the junior year.

Locally, internships are available through government, business, and nonprofit organizations on a two- or three-day-a-week basis, enabling students to continue with their course work at the same time. Many students are offered jobs by their internship organization upon graduation.

In addition, through the Hudson Mohawk Association of Colleges and Universities (which comprises the eighteen colleges in the area), cross-registration is possible at such institutions as the College of Saint Rose, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, Skidmore College, Union College, and the University at Albany, State University of New York.

Academic Facilities

The Standish Library collection of more than 321,000 volumes consists of books, journals, microforms, compact discs, videocassettes, and a growing number of electronic information sources. More than 6,000 volumes are added annually, and 1,600 serial subscriptions are currently maintained, with electronic access to thousands of additional journals. In 2004, Siena completed the renovation of Siena Hall, a high-technology teaching and learning center. It is also home to Sienas Hickey Financial Technology Center. The Hickey Center provides Sienas students the opportunity to trade stocks, bonds, cash, and currency in a virtual environment and provides students with access to leading sources of financial data.

All academic and residential buildings are interconnected with a high-speed Ethernet network connected via fiber optics. This network backbone runs at 10 and 100 Mbps. Every student residence space includes a 10 Mbps connection point to access the Colleges network and the Internet. The network includes more than 2,500 ports. The computer facilities are accessible 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Numerous computers are available throughout the campus for student use.

Aid is usually awarded in a package combining scholarships or grants, loans, and a job. Students who remain in good academic standing have their aid renewed.

Faculty

Sienas faculty members are committed to teaching. Student concerns and development are at the heart of the curriculum. Nine out of every 10 full-time faculty members hold the highest degree awarded in their field. Students are assigned a faculty adviser to help in the planning of their course of study.
