The College

Sarah Lawrence College is a model for individualized education among liberal arts colleges. It offers an innovative program of study that encourages students to take intellectual risks and explore highly challenging topics as they take an active role in the planning and pursuit of their education.

The Colleges forty-six buildings are set on a 41-acre campus combining the charm of a rural English village with award-winning contemporary buildings. There are 1,391 undergraduates and 318 graduate students. Approximately 40 students attend the Center for Continuing Education, which is a flexible, supportive program for returning adult students. The College draws its students from across the country and around the world. Nearly 90 percent live on campus. Sarah Lawrence has an active campus, offering opportunities for involvement in clubs, student organizations, dramatic productions, musical performances, literary societies, student publications, student government, and athletics. There are no sororities or fraternities.

The College is accredited by the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools and approved by the New York State Education Department.

On the graduate level, the College offers programs in writing, theater, dance, human genetics, health advocacy, art of teaching, child development, and womens history. A dual degree in child development and social work is offered with the New York University School of Social Work, and a joint degree in womens history and law is offered in cooperation with Pace University Law School.

Location

Sarah Lawrence is located in southern Westchester County, 15 miles north of midtown Manhattan. Main roads and the railroad make it possible to reach the city in 30 minutes, enabling students to take advantage of a wide range of social and cultural riches as well as internship possibilities in New York City. Students obtain internships in the arts, business, communications, law, medicine, publishing, social services, and the theater.

Majors and Degrees

Sarah Lawrence grants the Bachelor of Arts in liberal arts degree to undergraduate students. The academic program is divided into four divisions: history and the social sciences, consisting of anthropology, economics, history, political science, psychology, public policy, science technology and society, and sociology; humanities, consisting of art history, Asian studies, film history, languages, literature, music history, philosophy, and religion; natural sciences and mathematics, consisting of biology, chemistry, mathematics, physics, and computer science; and creative and performing arts, consisting of dance, music, theater, writing, and visual arts (drawing, filmmaking, painting, photography, printmaking, and sculpture). There are no majors or required courses, but students are expected to work in at least three of the four divisions.

Academic Programs

Each student works with his or her faculty adviser, called a don in the Oxford and Cambridge tradition, to plan a course of study. Most courses consist of two parts: the seminar, limited to 15 students, and the conference, a private, biweekly meeting with the seminar professor. In conference, students create individual projects that extend the material assigned in the seminar and connect it to their academic and career goals. In the performing artsdance, music, and theaterstudents work makes up several components that together constitute a full course. Although transcripts of official grades are available, written evaluations that more clearly define strengths, weaknesses, and progress are provided to each student.

The College operates on the semester system, with terms beginning in early September and late January.

Off-Campus Programs

Within the U.S., Sarah Lawrence College has established exchange programs with Reed College in Portland, Oregon, and Eugene Lang College, the undergraduate division of New School University in New York Citys historic Greenwich Village. Outside the United States, the College sponsors academic programs in Florence, Catania (Sicily), Havana, Oxford, and Paris as well as a program in cooperation with the British American Drama Academy in London. Students may also study in other countries around the world. Students can combine on-campus study with off-campus fieldwork and internships at a variety of places, including art museums, theaters, and hospitals and with orchestras, dance companies, publications, social action programs, government agencies, and businesses.

Admission Requirements

Sarah Lawrence College accepts first-year students for the fall semester and transfer applicants for both the fall and spring semesters. The College recognizes that intelligence and creative power can be expressed in many different ways and is willing to look at both traditional and nontraditional criteria in assessing applicants. The completion of 16 units of secondary school work or the equivalent is the standard academic requirement for first-year admission. The College specifies these units as follows: 4 units required of English; a minimum of 2 units required (34 units recommended) each of mathematics, science, foreign language, and history; and 34 units recommended of social studies.

High school seniors who consider Sarah Lawrence their first-choice college and who wish to be informed of an admission decision early in their senior year may apply as early decision candidates. The Admission Committee also considers as early admission applicants those students with very strong academic qualifications and personal maturity who have completed three years of high school and who wish to apply after their junior year of high school.

The College welcomes transfer applications from students who have completed at least one full year of college and from students who expect, in qualifying for the Bachelor of Arts degree, to spend at least two consecutive years at Sarah Lawrence College. (Students with less than one full year of credits who have matriculated at another college may apply for first-year admission with possible advanced standing.) Approximately 50 transfers matriculate each year from a wide range of postsecondary institutions.

Sophomores, juniors, and seniors enrolled at other institutions may apply to the Sarah Lawrence Guest Year Program for one semester or a complete year of full-time study at the College. Guests attend Sarah Lawrence to concentrate in a particular discipline not offered at their home institution, work with respected master teachers one-on-one in conferences, and take advantage of the facilities of New York City in conjunction with rigorous academic study. Students who have not matriculated elsewhere but wish to enroll in one or two specific courses for credit may apply as nonmatriculated students.

Sarah Lawrence does not consider the SAT or ACT scores in the application process. The Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) must be taken by students who speak English as a second language and who have not been educated in an English-language medium. A personal interview on campus or with a local alumna/alumnus is strongly recommended for all applicants.

Sarah Lawrence College admits students regardless of race, color, sex, sexual orientation, disability, or national origin and thereafter accords them all the rights and privileges generally made available to students at the College. The College is strongly committed to basing judgments about individuals upon their qualifications and abilities and to protecting individual rights of privacy, association, belief, and expression.
