The College

Founded in 1948 by the Basilian fathers, St.John Fisher College is dedicated to serving the individual needs of its students. Originally a Catholic college for men, Fisher is now an independent, coeducational college with 58 percent women and 55 percent resident students. The College offers thirty-one undergraduate programs in business, the humanities, nursing, sciences, and social sciences and is accredited by the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools. The College also offers eleven masters programs and two doctoral programs leading to the Master of Business Administration, the Master of Science, the Master of Science in Education, the Doctor of Education, and the Doctor of Pharmacy.

Fishers unique First-Year Program reaches beyond the transition to college to focus on developing responsible campus citizens with independent learning skills, who fully explore educational and career aspirations. The Learning Community Program gives first-year students the opportunity to take courses in clusters that focus on a central theme. Through this approach to learning, students and faculty members examine a complex topic from multiple perspectives and discover connections among various disciplines. Fishers Learning Communities also enable students to learn cooperatively and develop close working relationships with other students and faculty members.

All of the residence halls have been renovated, giving all students access to the Internet and cable TV in their rooms. Keough Hall, the Colleges newest residence, opened in September2005 and added more than 200beds.

Fisher offers a full range of extracurricular activities designed to cater to the diverse interests of the 2,625 full-time and 225 part-time undergraduate students, 770 masters students, and 170 doctoral students. Such activities include a student newspaper, a campus radio station, a complete intramural program, and more than sixty student organizations. In addition, the Student Activities Board sponsors appearances by on-campus lecturers and entertainers.

Fisher is a member of NCAA Division III, ECAC, the NYS Womens Collegiate Athletic Association, and the Empire 8. Mens intercollegiate sports are baseball, basketball, football, golf, lacrosse, soccer, and tennis. Womens intercollegiate sports are basketball, cheerleading, lacrosse, soccer, softball, tennis, and volleyball. Club sports include cross-country, ice hockey and mens and womens rugby. The Student Life Center, which is the hub of the athletic activities, includes courts for basketball, racquetball, squash, tennis, and volleyball; a sauna; a lounge; and a fitness area. Growney Stadium, complete with 2,100 bleacher seats and a press box, is equipped with an all-weather synthetic playing field to allow for all-season and nighttime play. Other on-campus athletics facilities include a nine-hole golf course, a softball field, a baseball complex, four outdoor tennis courts, and two grass practice fields. In the summer, Fisher is proud to host the Buffalo Bills training camp on campus.

Location

Located on 154 parklike acres, Fisher offers a balance of city activity and suburban tranquility. Just 10 minutes from the Fisher campus, Rochester, the Worlds Image Center, offers many cultural attractions, including the Eastman Theater, the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra, the International Museum of Photography at George Eastman House, the Rochester Museum and Science Center, the Memorial Art Gallery, and the Strasenburgh Planetarium. Home to a number of Fortune 500 companies, such as Eastman Kodak Company, Xerox Corporation, and Bausch and Lomb, the city of Rochester offers Fisher students opportunities for internships and employment after graduation.

Majors and Degrees

St.John Fisher College offers courses leading to the Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Science degrees. Undergraduate majors are offered in accounting, adolescence education, American studies, anthropology, applied information technology, biology, chemistry, childhood education, communication/journalism, computer science, corporate finance, economics, English, French, history, interdisciplinary studies, international studies, management, mathematics, nursing, philosophy, physics, political science, psychology, religious studies, sociology, Spanish, special education, sport management, and statistics. The areas of concentration available in the management major include corporate finance, financial planning, general business management, human resource management, and marketing.

Fisher offers a fast track to the B.S./M.S. in advanced practice nursing. The College also offers a cooperative 3+4 program with the Pennsylvania College of Optometry and a cooperative engineering program with the University of Detroit, Clarkson University, Manhattan College, Columbia University, and the University at Buffalo, the State University of New York.

Academic Programs

The bachelors degree is conferred upon those who complete a minimum of 120 semester hours of credit with a cumulative GPA of at least 2.0. Thirty hours of credit and half of the requirements for the major must be earned at St.John Fisher College. Graduates of the accounting program are eligible to sit for the CPA exam in New York State.

Off-Campus Programs

Fisher offers a multitude of special programs that are designed to complement its academic programs. Students in various disciplines can take advantage of an internship program, Albany and Washington Semesters, and cross-registration with fourteen member colleges of the Rochester Area College Consortium. Study-abroad opportunities throughout the world are also available to students.

Academic Facilities

Over the last ten years, most of the academic and athletic facilities on campus have been upgraded and enhanced. Classrooms have been modernized and outfitted with state-of-the-art media facilities. Laboratory space has been upgraded with state-of-the-market educational technology. The Golisano Academic Gateway, complete with the Frontier Cyber Caf and the learning resource center, opened in January2001. The Ralph C. Wilson, Jr. Building opened in September2003, expanding classroom capacity by 20percent and providing additional faculty offices, seminar rooms, and meeting spaces.

The Campus Center opened in fall 2005 and serves as the hub and central gathering place of student activity on campus. This two-story facility supports general student gathering spaces, which include a performance space, recreational area, offices for student clubs and organizations, and the College Store (bookstore), all located on the first floor. The second floor of the Campus Center houses the Offices of the Dean of Students, Residential Life, Campus Life, and Campus Ministry, as well as additional student organization offices and meeting spaces.

The Charles J. Lavery Library meets the information needs of twenty-first-century students. A blend of traditional and electronic resources covering a broad range of subjects is available to the Fisher community. The librarys print collection is supplemented by an extensive offering of online scholarly resources. Information resources include 190,000 volumes, 28,000 audiovisual items, 882 print periodical subscriptions, and access to over 9,000 electronic periodical titles.

Professional librarians welcome students to the library reference desk during day and evening hours. There is also a 24/7 online-chat reference service. The librarians are information specialists committed to the academic success of all students. Individual research guidance is available by appointment. Librarians also teach classes in information literacy and subject-specific research to all levels of students.

Lavery Library is a member of the Rochester Regional Library Council, representing a regional collection of more than 3,400,000 titles. Interlibrary loan staff members can obtain resources not owned by Lavery Library from regional, national, and international libraries.

Costs

Tuition for 200708 was $21,670. Room and board costs were $9410 with a meal plan and a room in one of Fishers residence halls.

Financial Aid

Committed to helping students meet the cost of their education, Fisher works to assess each individuals financial need. Financial aid is provided through scholarships, grants, loans, and work-study arrangements and is awarded by Fisher, the state, and the federal government. In 200708, the average financial aid package for incoming Fisher students was $16,000.

St.John Fisher College offers a generous academic scholarship program that is based on high school average, strength of curriculum, and SAT or ACT scores. Students eligible for academic scholarships are automatically notified by the Office of Freshman Admissions. Scholarship award amounts are $8500 to $11,000 per year. The College also offers an honors program and a science scholars program. The award in each of these programs is $3000, in addition to any academic scholarships for which the student qualifies.

Twelve years ago, the College introduced the Service Scholars Program. This program is designed to recognize and reward high school seniors who demonstrate an ongoing interest in serving the needs of others through a commitment to community service. Scholarship awards equal one third of the total yearly cost of tuition, fees, room, and board for four years. In 2002, the Service Scholars Program won the Presidents Community Volunteer Awardthe highest national honor for volunteering. The College was honored, along with 19 other winners from across the country, at a White House ceremony. Fisher was the only college or university and the only organization in New York State to be honored that year.

In 1998, the College announced the creation of the Fannie and Sam Constantino First Generation Scholarship Program, designed to provide financial assistance to students whose parents did not graduate from a postsecondary institutionmuch like the pioneer classes of St.John Fisher College. Recipients receive annual scholarships ranging from $5000 to one third of the total yearly cost of Fishers tuition, fees, room, and board for four years.

Faculty

Fishers 182 full-time faculty members are dedicated to helping students, both in and out of the classroom, as they strive to achieve their goals. Eighty-three percent of full-time faculty members hold doctoral or terminal degrees. The student-teacher ratio of 14:1 offers a personal approach to education; 75percent of all classes have fewer than 30 students. Fishers Office of Academic Affairs and an outstanding faculty share responsibility for academic advising, helping students to explore the thirty-one majors that are available to them.

Student Government

Student leadership skills are developed through the Student Government Association, which is responsible for the social, cultural, and judicial areas of student life. Resident students elect a Resident Student Association, while commuting students elect a Commuter Council to represent them in planning special activities. The Student Activities Board is responsible for social activities and cultural events throughout the academic year.

Admission Requirements

Admission to St.John Fisher College is based primarily on the following: grade point average, strength of curriculum, scores on standardized tests (SAT/ACT), extracurricular activities and/or work experience, and the counselor/teacher recommendation. Interviews are also considered and strongly encouraged.

A candidate for admission to the freshman class must be a graduate of an approved secondary school and present a minimum of 16units of college-preparatory course work in English, foreign languages, mathematics, and natural and social sciences. An applicant should present a secondary school average of 85percent or above in these academic subjects.

Fisher welcomes qualified transfer students from two- and four-year colleges for both the fall and spring terms. To be considered for admission, transfer students must have a cumulative grade point average of 2.0 or better. If the student has obtained an A.A., A.S., or A.A.S. degree, 60 to 66 credit hours are transferred. All transfer applicants should consult the Undergraduate Bulletin for details.

The College has various special admission programs, including early decision, abbreviated procedures for veterans and other military personnel, and admission for part-time study.

The College offers the Arthur O. Eve Higher Education Opportunity Program (HEOP) for students who need special academic and financial assistance. The program provides academic support services, counseling, and financial aid for qualified students to help them achieve academic success.

Fisher grants college credit for satisfactory grades on the Advanced Placement test, the International Baccalaureate (IB) Program exams, and the College-Level Examination Program (CLEP). Only students who receive a 3 or higher in all AP subjects and a 4 or higher on the AP science and language exams are granted Advanced Placement credit. CLEP and IB scoring guidelines are available through the Office of Freshman Admissions. Credit is only granted for subject-specific CLEP exams.
