The University

Radford University is a comprehensive, residential university committed to individualized instruction in medium-sized classes, high academic standards, and excellence in teaching. Established in 1910, Radfords enrollment has grown to more than 9,200, of whom 88percent are undergraduates. The state-supported University offers 106 undergraduate and thirty-eight graduate program options through the College of Humanities and Behavioral Sciences, the College of Business and Economics, the College of Education and Human Development, the College of Science and Technology, the College of Visual and Performing Arts, the Waldron College of Health and Human Services, and the College of Graduate and Extended Studies.

At the graduate level, Radford University awards M.S., M.A., M.B.A., M.F.A., M.S.N., M.S.W., and Ed.S. degrees.

Fifteen residence halls, housing from 120 to 950 students each, offer a variety of options to the 3,150 students who live on campus. All residence halls are in suite arrangements, with two rooms sharing one bathroom. Freshmen are required to live on campus and can choose one of several learning/residential communities. Most off-campus students reside in rental housing within four to five blocks of the campus. Members of the Radford community come from all over Virginia as well as from forty-five other states and forty-seven countries. Radford provides many opportunities for students to participate in exchange and study-abroad programs.

Radford University offers guest speakers, theatrical productions, concerts, films, social fraternities and sororities, student publications, WVRU radio station and television station, intramural sports, and other cultural, social, and leisure opportunities. In all, there are more than 200 clubs and organizations on campus. The new Bonnie Hurlburt Student Center has lounge, study, and meeting areas as well as a bowling alley, movie theater, and three additional eateries. Dalton Hall, the student services building, houses the food court, dining hall, bookstore, and post office. The Dedmon Center, a $10.8-million sports and recreation complex, provides complete sports and fitness facilities, including an Olympic-size swimming pool and Cupp Stadium, a new track and soccer complex. Radford Universitys teams participate in seventeen intercollegiate sports and are members of NCAA DivisionI.

Location

Radford, a city of 16,200 people, is located approximately 36 miles southwest of Roanoke in the Blue Ridge Mountains in scenic western Virginia. The Blue Ridge Parkway, Appalachian Trail, New River, and Claytor Lake, which has more than 100 miles of shoreline, offer many outdoor activities in a region noted for its natural beauty. Students can ski, hike, canoe, bicycle, and enjoy other seasonal activities.

The local community offers opportunities for dining, socializing, shopping, and off-campus living. The Universitys campus is near I-81 and is located about 45 minutes from the Roanoke airport.

Majors and Degrees

Radford University awards B.A., B.S., B.F.A., B.M., B.B.A., B.S.N., and B.S.W. degrees in the areas of accounting; anthropology; art; biology; chemistry; communication; communication sciences and disorders; computer science and technology; criminal justice; dance; economics; English; exercise, sport, and health education; fashion; finance; foods and nutrition; foreign languages (French, German, Spanish); geography; geology; history; information science and systems; interdisciplinary studies (education); interior design; management; marketing; mathematics and statistics; media studies; medical technology; music; nursing; philosophy and religious studies; physics; political science; psychology; recreation, parks, and tourism; social science; social work; sociology; and theater.

Radford also offers preprofessional programs in law, medicine, pharmacy, and physical therapy.

Academic Programs

To be eligible for an undergraduate degree, students must complete at least 120 semester hours of college-level academic work, including 50semester hours of general education courses. Honors courses are available to students enrolled in the Honors Academy and to any qualified student. The Office of New Student Programs coordinates several programs designed to ease the transition from high school to college. The University 100class and Success Starts Here are programs that help first-year students become active and successful college students. Quest, Radfords summer orientation program, allows incoming students to acclimate themselves to campus, receive advising, register for classes, and make friends before coming to school in the fall. An Army ROTC program is also available to interested and qualified students.

The University year consists of two semesters, August to December (fall) and January to May (spring), and summer sessions.

Academic Facilities

The McConnell Library offers students access to textual material, periodicals, and information recorded on film, microfilm, records, compact audio discs, and tapes. Services include interlibrary loans, computer-assisted bibliographical searches, multimedia classes, and the use of multimedia equipment.

RUs newest academic facilities include Waldron Hall and a newly renovated Peters Hall. Waldron Hall serves as the home for the Waldron College of Health and Human Services and is one of the countrys most comprehensive and technologically sophisticated educational environments. Academic divisions include the Schools of Nursing and Social Work and the Departments of Communication Sciences and Disorders, Foods and Nutrition, and Recreation, Parks, and Tourism. An on-site clinical simulation center provides students with practical experience in their chosen fields. Peters Hall houses the entire College of Education and Human Development under one roof. This academic facility has numerous state-of-the-art classrooms with smart boards, a Teaching Resource Center, and new studios for the Dance Department.

Costs

The basic expenses for the 200708 academic year (AugustMay) are $6176 for tuition and fees for in-state undergraduate students ($14,510 for out-of-state students), $6398 for room and board, and an average of $800 for books and supplies.

Financial Aid

The University provides financial aid awards, based on demonstrated financial need, and scholarships, based on leadership, character, and academic achievement. Financial aid at Radford University is provided through loans, work-study awards, and grants from the federal and state governments and from private funds established through the Radford University Foundation. In addition, some departments have special fellowship funds for undergraduates. Students seeking financial aid should submit the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) to Federal Student Aid Programs by March1. Transfer students who have attended summer school or who transfer for the spring semester must also request a completed Financial Aid Transcript from colleges and universities previously attended, even if financial aid was not received.

The Radford University Foundation sponsors an annual scholarship competition for qualified freshman students. For students to be eligible to compete, completed admissions applications must be received by the Office of Admissions no later than December15. Students chosen to compete for scholarships are those who have excelled academically during their high school career. Several full scholarships, which include the equivalent of in-state tuition and fees, room and board, and a book stipend, are available. Partial scholarships, which are applied to tuition and fees as well as room and board, are also available.

Faculty

More than 80 percent of Radford Universitys faculty members hold terminal degrees in their fields of study. With a student-faculty ratio of 21:1, Radford is committed to interaction between faculty members and students both in and out of the classroom. In addition to their primary responsibilities of teaching and advising students, faculty members are engaged in research, publication, and other professional activities. Fewer than 5percent of Radfords undergraduate classes are taught by graduate instructors.

Student Government

Radford Universitys Student Government Association enables students to participate in the administration of their own affairs and provides representation on behalf of students. Every undergraduate student is automatically a member of the Student Government Association. Students can participate in various councils, including the senate, international student affairs council, and diversity promotions council.

Admission Requirements

Admission to Radford University is based on a review of each applicants academic qualifications. The University admits students whose ability, preparation, and character indicate potential for success in the programs of study offered. Admission is not based on race, gender, handicap, age, veteran status, national origin, religious or political affiliation, or sexual preference. Applicants for admission are considered on the basis of high school records (course of study, grade point average, and rank in class), SAT or ACT scores, and evidence of interest and motivation. Most successful applicants have taken 4units of English, 4units of college-preparatory math, 4units of lab science, 4units of social science, and 34units of foreign language. All applicants need to have completed at least Algebra 1, Geometry, and Algebra 2 in order to meet the Universitys minimum math requirement. Students planning to major in nursing should complete units in both biology and chemistry. Students who wish to visit the campus are encouraged to call for an appointment between 8 and 5, Monday through Friday. Tours of the campus are conducted at 10a.m., noon, and 2p.m., Monday and Friday; 10 and 2, Tuesday through Thursday, and at 10, 11, and noon on most Saturdays during the academic year.
