Newberry College

The College

A private undergraduate liberal arts institution established in 1856, Newberry College is affiliated with the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America. With a mission focused on educating the whole person, Newberry epitomizes the small-college amenities of personal attention, easy rapport between students and faculty members, and a supportive environment for academic, personal, and social development.

Newberry Colleges student body is made up of about 840 men and women from twenty-eight states and twelve foreign countries. About 40percent are women. Seventy percent of the students live in College residence halls; others live off campus or commute from home.

Students participate in a variety of College-sponsored activities, including five national fraternities and four national sororities; eight music-related organizations; three campus publications; musical theater and drama productions; intramural sports; ethnic, political, and religious organizations; honor, service, and leadership societies; the Newberry College Student Government Association (student government); the Newberry College Student Ambassadors; and special interest groups.

The Newberry College Indians maintain a full schedule of NCAA DivisionII intercollegiate athletic competition in mens baseball, basketball, cross-country, football, golf, soccer, tennis, and wrestling and womens basketball, cross-country, golf, soccer, softball, tennis, and volleyball as well as competitive cheering.

The Colleges buildings represent a pleasant combination of antebellum and contemporary architecture, including the new East Residence Hall with modern suite-style accommodations. Four buildings around the quadrangle make up the Newberry College Historic District and are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Wiles Chapel, which contains the College Theatre, exemplifies modern Gothic architecture with some influence from the Prairie school. The physical education and athletic complex, including the 1,600-seat Eleazer Arena, was completed in 1982. The O.L. Casey Student Center adjoins the swimming pool and the Physical Education Complex, the Casey Meeting Room, and the Presidential Dining Room. The Student Center houses the Physical Education Faculty and Athletic Staff offices.
