The School

The New York School of Interior Design (NYSID) is an independent, coeducational, nonprofit college accredited by National Association of Schools of Art and Design. It was established in 1916 by architect Sherrill Whiton and chartered by the Board of Regents of the University of the State of New York in 1924. Throughout its history, the School has devoted all of its resources to a single field of studyinterior designand has played a significant role in the development of the interior design profession. Enrollment is approximately 750.

NYSID continually updates its curriculum to reflect the many changes taking place in interior design. Todays students learn not only the colors and materials appropriate to period residential interiors, but also how to design hospitals, offices, and restaurants with barrier-free access. Whether learning the importance of historic preservation or the latest programs in computer-aided design, NYSID students learn a wide range of skills and techniques taught by faculty members who work in the field. The areas art and antique shops, museums, professional design studios, and showrooms, are all an exciting part of the colleges campus.

The atmosphere of the college is cosmopolitan, not only because of its excellent location but also because it attracts students from all areas of the United States and abroad. International students make up approximately 10percent of the student population. Students also transfer from other colleges in order to obtain a more professional, career-directed education.

Because of its select faculty and established reputation, the School continues to maintain a close relationship with the interior design industry. This provides an excellent means for students to develop associations that offer opportunities to move into the profession after completing their degree program at NYSID.

In addition to the three programs in interior design listed below, NYSID also offers a postprofessional Master of Fine Arts (M.F.A.) degree in interior design.

Location

The New York School of Interior Design is located on Manhattans Upper East Side, where many of the major interior design studios are located. Many of the worlds most important galleries, museums, and showrooms are close by, most within walking distance. The city is world-renowned for its architecture, cosmopolitan urban experience, cultural activities, and historic districts. The college can be reached easily by bus, car, subway, and train.

Majors and Degrees

The New York School of Interior Design offers three programs in interior design: a four-year Bachelor of Fine Arts (B.F.A.) degree accredited by the Council for Interior Design Accreditation (CIDA, formerly FIDER), a two-year Associate in Applied Science (A.A.S.) degree, and a 24-credit nondegree Basic Interior Design Program.

Academic Programs

The New York School of Interior Design is a single-major college. It devotes all of its resources to providing a comprehensive education in interior design, and the carefully organized curriculum is constantly evaluated by professionals in the field. The various academic programs compose an integrated curriculum covering interior design concepts; history of art, architecture, furniture, and interiors; technical and communication skills, materials and methods, philosophy and theory; and professional design procedures and design problem solving.

The Basic Interior Design Program consists of a 24-credit required sequence of foundation courses in which all students enroll. These courses provide a cultural, general, and professional introduction to the field of interior design. Although completion of the Basic Interior Design Program may be the major goal for some, for most students it serves as the foundation for matriculation into the degree programs.

The A.A.S. degree program provides the minimum educational requirement to become a certified interior designer in New York State. The 66-credit program includes design, liberal arts, and professional courses.

The 132-credit Bachelor of Fine Arts degree program provides the education that, with practical experience, enables the graduate to take qualifying exams for interior design certification in many states and to join national and local professional associations. Studies focus on the development of a broad array of conceptual analysis, creative problem solving, relevant cultural developments, and technical skills. Students are required to take 32 credits of liberal arts courses in addition to 100 credits of professional design-related courses.

The program planning is flexible and permits students to take courses on a full-time or part-time basis during the day, evening, and on weekends. The School maintains an active job placement service. Students may be placed in a wide variety of positions that reflect the full spectrum of job opportunities in the interior design profession.

Academic Facilities

The NYSID campus occupies two buildings on Manhattans Upper East Side. The college has a first-rate physical plant with light-filled studios; a unique lighting laboratory; a centralized computer facility for computer-aided design (CAD); a large atelier for independent work furnished with drafting tables, computers, and a materials collection for use in projects; a lecture hall and seminar rooms; a well-stocked bookstore; and a handsome auditorium. The library contains more than 12,000 volumes devoted to design, 100 periodical subscriptions, a product literature collection, and a select collection of 35mm slides illustrating the history of interior design and decorative arts.

Costs

Tuition for 200809 will be $650 per credit, plus a $145 registration/technology fee each semester. Typical expenses for the first year are projected to be $21,450 for tuition and $290 in registration fees.

Financial Aid

The New York School of Interior Design makes every effort to provide assistance to students with financial need. Several institutional scholarships are available for students who meet the criteria. Students are encouraged to apply for the New York State Tuition Assistance Program (TAPfor New York cState residents only), the Federal Pell Grant, and Federal Education Loans. The college also participates in the Federal College Work-Study Program, which offers opportunities for on-campus employment.

Faculty

The colleges programs are supported by an excellent and dedicated faculty of 85. In addition to teaching, faculty members have active professional careers in appraising, architecture, decorative arts, fine arts, furniture and fabric design, history, interior design, law, lighting design, and psychology.

Student Government

The college has an active student chapter of the American Society of Interior Designers (ASID). ASID organizes lectures, tours, workshops, and other events throughout the school year, providing an inside view of the interior design industry.

Admission Requirements

All applicants must submit an application, an official secondary school transcript, SAT or ACT scores, and two letters of recommendation. Applicants to degree programs must meet the visual requirements by providing a portfolio or sketchbook described in the catalog; transfer students must also submit college transcripts.
