The University

There is much to discover at New Jersey City University (NJCU). This vital, 78-year-old liberal arts institution (formerly Jersey City State College) offers an incomparable educational experience at an affordable price. At the heart of the University is a strong academic program that is recognized by a host of accrediting institutions. NJCU has an esteemed and caring faculty and extensive student support services. Thirty-six undergraduate major degree programs are offered, as are twenty-three graduate degree programs and teacher certification programs. NJCU provides unparalleled opportunity for academic and personal growth through such study options as its nationally recognized Cooperative Education Program, which enables undergraduates in all majors to earn income and academic credit while experiencing field study at one of hundreds of participating corporations, agencies, and organizations.

There is a sense of excitement on the 47-acre, tree-lined campus, which is located in the midst of one of the worlds largest metropolitan areas. The University community is rich in diversity; people from many cultures come together and learn from each other. The student population includes high school graduates pursuing the four-year degree sequence, part-time and weekend students, nontraditional older students, and students seeking job retraining, all of whom are able to take advantage of the Universitys flexible class scheduling and online learning opportunities. Although drawn primarily from northern New Jersey and the New York metropolitan area, students from ten other states, some as distant as California and Florida, are enrolled. International students, who come to the University from more than fifty-two other countries, enrich the multicultural nature of the campus.

The total undergraduate and graduate enrollment for full- and part-time students at the University is 10,000. With an average class size of 20 students can work closely and directly with faculty members and classmates, encouraging intellectual exchange and fostering successful mentoring relationships.

To continue to provide NJCU students with first-rate facilities that encourage intellectual success and ensure a rich quality of life on the campus and in the community, NJCU is moving ahead with capital construction projects, renovation, and maintenance of its Main Campus as well as the development of its West Campus. In addition, the University continues to have a leadership role in Jersey Citys Bayside Redevelopment Vision Plan revitalizing 700 acres on the west side of the city. The West Campus, a 21-acre mixed-use site located several blocks west of the Main Campus, will include several academic buildings, a performing arts center, upgraded athletic fields and an indoor field house, student and staff housing, parking, and retail stores. In November2005, NJCUs West Campus Redevelopment Plan received the Smart Growth Award in Urban Design from the New Jersey Department of Community Affairs and the New Jersey chapter of the American Institute of Architects.

The Michael B. Gilligan Student Union has just undergone a complete renovation and redesign. The interior features a central atrium with mall-style social space. The University Service Center, a cyber lounge, a number of other services, and an auditorium are located on the first floor. Special areas include quiet study lounges, a game room, a TV lounge, the University bookstore, a cafeteria, indoor parking, small and large meeting rooms, a private dining room, and a multipurpose room that can accommodate banquets, special events, lectures, festivals, and fairs. The Gilligan Student Union is also home to the Student Government Organization, the student newspaper, the radio station, and many clubs, organizations, fraternities, and sororities.

Students can participate in varsity sports through the Universitys intercollegiate athletics program, which includes mens and womens basketball, cross-country, indoor and outdoor track, soccer, and volleyball; mens baseball; and womens bowling and softball. The Universitys John J. Moore Athletics and Fitness Center is a 72,000-square-foot state-of-the-art facility that houses a 25-yard, six-lane swimming pool; saunas; a 2,000-seat basketball/volleyball arena; an elevated jogging track; a fitness center and training facility; and three racquetball courts. The Thomas M. Gerrity Athletic Complex, home to NJCUs outdoor sports and located a mile southwest of the Main Campus, is a 14-acre facility that features a 3,000-seat stadium, an enclosed press box, and a natural-grass surface.

Location

NJCU is located in Jersey City, New Jersey, minutes away from New York City. Although the Universitys location in the urban center of the Northeast affords students all the cultural and intellectual stimulation of the metropolitan area, the campus has retained a quiet atmosphere for study. The Universitys setting also makes travel to and from the campus convenient, providing easy access by car, train, and bus. Newark Liberty International Airport is located minutes away.

Majors and Degrees

Undergraduate programs at New Jersey City University lead to the Bachelor of Arts (B.A.), Bachelor of Science (B.S.), Bachelor of Music (B.M.), Bachelor of Fine Arts (B.F.A.), or Bachelor of Science in Nursing (B.S.N.) degrees.

NJCUs William J. Maxwell College of Arts and Sciences offers major programs leading to a bachelors degree in art (B.A. or B.F.A.), biology (B.A. or B.S.), chemistry and computer science (B.S.), geoscience/geography (B.A. or B.S.), physics (B.A. or B.S.), and economics, English, history, mathematics, media arts, music, philosophy, political science, psychology, sociology, and Spanish (B.A.). A B.S. in clinical laboratory sciences is offered jointly with the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey (UMDNJ). The Deborah Cannon Partridge Wolfe College of Education offers major programs leading to a Bachelor of Arts degree in early childhood education, elementary education, and special education. Also offered are undergraduate programs that lead to certification, such as New Jersey Department of Education certification in secondary education. The College of Professional Studies offers major programs leading to a Bachelor of Science degree in business administration, criminal justice, fire science, health sciences, and security. The Universitys Department of Fire Science is the only university-based fire science program in New Jersey and one of few in the nation. A Bachelor of Science in Nursing (B.S.N.) is also offered.

New Jersey City University and New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT) offer a dual-degree program that enables undergraduates to study for five years and earn two Bachelor of Science degrees: a Bachelor of Science in applied physics from NJCU and a Bachelor of Science in electrical engineering from NJIT.

Academic Programs

As an institution committed to the liberal arts, New Jersey City University expects all incoming students to satisfy 18 credits of all University requirements and 48 credits of general studies area requirements. Students take 48 credits from each of six clusters: natural sciences, social sciences, art and media arts, humanities, multicultural disciplines and languages, and quantitative and computer literacy. There are specific major requirements as well as electives in each degree program. In addition, students may use general electives to complete a minor or a second major, strengthen a major, or pursue areas of personal interest. In their junior and senior years of study, students have ample opportunity to engage in fieldwork in their major. Online learning opportunities are available to undergraduates. The University calendar is based on a two-semester system with two summer sessions.

The Honors Program is an innovative and intellectually rigorous course of study offering an advanced core curriculum that emphasizes in-depth investigation rather than broad surveys, as well as the opportunity to do independent research. Class sizes are small and personalized, so there is more opportunity to interact with faculty members within a community of learners from a variety of disciplines. Acceptance into the Honors Program is based on a combination of standing in the high school class, high school GPA, combined scores on the SAT, placement scores in writing and math, and the application essay. Current NJCU and transfer students with a GPA of higher than 3.0 may also be eligible for admission to the Honors Program.

Off-Campus Programs

NJCU, the premier cooperative education university in New Jersey, offers sophomores, juniors, and seniors in all academic areas the opportunity to study for a degree while working in salaried positions in related fields. NJCUs Cooperative Education Program places students with more than 550 local and international employers.

Academic Facilities

On the Main Campus, the most imposing new structure is the seven-story George Karnoutsos Arts and Sciences Hall, designed by the renowned architect Michael Graves. The 77,000-square-foot building opened in fall 2006. The academic building houses fourteen state-of-the-art classrooms, nine computer labs, faculty offices for nine departments, and the Office of the Dean of Arts and Sciences.

The Congressman Frank J. Guarini Library, a state-of-the-art research facility, houses 250,000 books and monographs, subscribes to 1,579 periodicals and journals and more than 22,500 e-journals in about 100 online databases, receives approximately 5,000 selected U.S. government publications per year, and maintains a collection of official state of New Jersey publications. The library has a complete file of microfiche issued by the Educational Research Information Center, which is a clearinghouse for research in all areas of education, and more than 500,000 fully indexed publications on microfilm. NJCU provides computer laboratory support services to students through its Office of Academic Computing.

NJCUs Media Arts Center is a 16,000-square-foot facility that houses two full-color broadcast-quality television studios, a radio and audio production studio, a complete 16-mm production studio and processing laboratory, two large projection/seminar rooms, an animation laboratory, a graphic-production studio, individual student editing space, and work rooms. Since 1991, the Media Arts Center has been the home of the Black Maria Film Festival.

The University administers the A. Harry Moore Laboratory School, which is a special education facility. The University Academy Charter High School is also located on the Universitys West Campus. The University is home to the NJCU Business Development Incubator, a campus resource that assists potential entrepreneurs with innovative ideas or commercially attractive technology by providing reasonably priced office space, a library, conference rooms, and marketing and managerial assistance.

The NJCU Speicher-Rubin Womens Center offers a range of services to women and presents programs on womens issues for NJCU and the community. The center provides a supportive atmosphere, informal counseling and referrals, and various education services. Both NJCUs Health and Wellness Center and Counseling and Psychological Services Center provide medical care, counseling, and psychotherapy services on the campus. The Academic Career Planning and Placement Center provides career counseling services and job placement assistance. NJCUs Early Childhood Learning Center provides educationally focused child care for the children of students.

Costs

Undergraduate tuition and fees for the 200708 academic year are $8155 for New Jersey residents and $14,759 for nonresidents. Room and board in NJCUs Vodra Hall Dormitory, Cooperative Education Dormitory, or apartment complex are $8200.

Financial Aid

NJCU offers students maximum opportunities for financial aid. Financial aid for eligible students includes needs-based federal grants, state grants, and scholarships; merit-based Corporate Scholarships; Federal Perkins Loans; Federal Stafford Student Loans; and jobs provided under the Federal Work-Study Program. Applicants for financial aid must submit the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). Approximately 75 percent of NJCU full-time undergraduates receive financial aid.

Faculty

Seventy-nine percent of NJCUs faculty members hold the highest degrees attainable in their fields. A student-faculty ratio of 14:1 supports the development of close mentoring relationships and fosters the academic, social, and cultural growth of undergraduates. This student-faculty ratio also enables NJCU professors to be very accessible to their students.

Student Government

NJCUs Student Government Organization (SGO) charters and regulates all student clubs and organizations funded by student activity fees, providing a necessary degree of leadership and coordination. The SGO is administered by the Student Council, which is composed of the Student Executive Committee and class representatives. Members of the SGO serve in the University Senate to represent the interests and concerns of students.

Admission Requirements

Admission to New Jersey City University is based on a students projected ability to complete a degree program. All admission decisions are made without regard to race, religion, sex, age, handicap, or national origin. It is desirable that freshman applicants rank in the top half of their high school class and complete a college-preparatory program that includes 4 units of English, 3 units of mathematics, 2 units of social science, and 2 units of laboratory science. A students combined SAT score or ACT score is taken into account in determining acceptance in individual cases. In addition, New Jersey residents who demonstrate financial need and do not meet traditional admissions requirements but have the academic potential and motivation to succeed in college may apply for admission through NJCUs Opportunity Scholarship Program (OSP). The University also accepts students who have been identified as learning disabled through its Project Mentor Program. Transfer applicants are required to have a minimum grade point average of 2.0. Transfer students are also required to have a minimum of 12 college-level credits. Every applicant must submit a required personal statement along with a completed application.
