The College

Mount Ida College, founded in 1899, is an affordable private liberal arts college with more than 1,400 students from over twenty-five states and twenty-five countries around the world and offering degree programs in more than twenty-five fields of study. Mount Ida College is a comprehensive college that combines professional education with a solid liberal arts foundation. Mount Ida campus life offers a supportive learning environment and a diverse, welcoming community.

Mount Ida takes a multidisciplinary approach to learning that emphasizes professional preparation. The All-College Curriculum helps students integrate what they learn in all of their courses, inside and outside of their major. Students learn to think critically and creatively. These transferable skills become the foundation for a lifetime of personal and professional success.

Many of the Colleges programs offer internships or culminate in a senior capstone project. The veterinary technology program, for instance, requires a minimum of six internships to ensure the widest range of practical knowledge possible. This real-world experience helps Mount Ida students quickly land jobs in their fields upon graduation. Mount Ida graduates understand todays world and how to succeed in it.

The result is quite amazing. Several degree programs have an impressive 100 percent job placement rate within a year of graduation, including interior design, liberal studies, business administration, equine management, funeral home management, and veterinary technology. College-wide, 88 percent of Mount Ida graduates work in a field related to their major within one year of earning a degree, and more than 92 percent have positions that require a bachelors degree.

At Mount Ida, learning takes place both in and out of the classroom. The College offers a full array of leadership opportunities. For instance, 25 percent of incoming students compete at the NCAA Division III level in one of several varsity sports that foster teamwork and leadership. Plus, Mount Ida students have the opportunity to participate in a variety of intramural programs, clubs, and campus organizations to enrich their education

Location

Beyond its unique approach to learning, Mount Ida literally offers students the best of both worlds. The picturesque, 72-acre campus is located in Newton, Massachusetts, which has twice been named the nations safest city. At the same time, Mount Ida is just 8 miles (13 kilometers) from downtown Boston, one of the worlds greatest college towns, giving Mount Idas students easy access to the inexhaustible wealth of cultural resources, internships and professional opportunities, community service opportunities, sports, and nightlife a major city has to offer. The College shuttle bus connects students with the Newton Centre subway service to Boston.

Majors and Degrees

Mount Ida grants B.A., B.S., B.L.S., A.A., and A.S. degrees. Majors and areas of study include American studies, applied forensic science, bereavement studies, biology, business administration, child development, computer animation, criminal justice, dental hygiene, English, equine management, fashion design, fashion merchandising and marketing, funeral home management, funeral service, general studies, graphic design, hotel and tourism management, human services, interior design, liberal studies, management, psychology, sports management, and veterinary technology. Mount Ida also offers a prelaw concentration, predental hygiene studies, and minors in American studies, art/design history, business, child study, coaching, criminalistics, criminal justice, English, forensic psychology, human services, leadership studies, legal studies, marketing, psychology, sociology, and studio art.

Academic Programs

Mount Ida students have access to exceptional academic services, all of which are designed to help them move from potential to achievement. Mount Idas commitment to its students successboth at Mount Ida and beyondis absolute.

In the Academic Success Center, students find content-area tutoring offered by professional and student tutors. In addition, professional writing associates in the comprehensive Writing Center can help students write and revise papers for any of their classes. Students with documented learning disabilities can enhance their academic experience through the Learning Opportunities Program, which provides weekly strategy-based tutorial sessions with a professional learning specialist. The federally funded Learning Circle Program, available to first-generation college students who meet eligibility guidelines, offers academic coaching, financial counseling, topic-based workshops, social events, and cultural opportunities. Altogether, these academic support programs provide an invaluable resource for Mount Ida students.

Students also find support in the Career Services Center, where they find help with resume and cover letter writing, interviewing skills, job research, and identification of their career goals. The Career Services Center also assists with internship and job placements and holds career fairs.

Costs

Tuition for the 200809 academic year is $22,275. Room and board charges are $11,100, with books and supplies costing between $500 and $1000, depending on the program of study.

Financial Aid

Need-based and merit-based assistance, including scholarships, grants, loans, and work-study, are available to qualified students. For the 200708 school year, $8 million in institutional aid was awarded. Mount Ida has a financial aid priority application deadline of May1.

Faculty

With approximately 190 full- and part-time faculty members, Mount Ida offers a student-faculty ratio of 13:1, with faculty members available to give each and every student the personalized attention they need to turn their potential into lasting achievement.

Admission Requirements

A composite evaluation is made of each applicant. Official high school and college transcripts (the latter where applicable) are required, as are SAT or ACT test scores (essay recommended), recommendations, and a personal statement. Transfer students must submit official transcripts of all completed college course work. Transfer credit for fashion design, graphic design, and interior design studio courses may depend on a portfolio review. The TOEFL may be required for students for whom English is not their native language; those applicants should check with the admissions office for more information.
