The College

Monroe College is a private, four year college located in New York State. It offers a masters degree program in business management and undergraduate programs in accounting, baking and pastry, business management, business technologies, criminal justice, culinary arts, health services administration, hospitality management, information technology, medical administration, medical assisting, nursing, and public health. Monroe College is committed to providing a high-quality education and individualized attention to serious-minded students. Students have the opportunity to gain academic and professional competency through comprehensive curricula and are also offered a support system that provides services that are essential for academic and professional success. Monroe, which has campuses in both the Bronx and New Rochelle, is accredited by the Commission on Higher Education of the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools.

Monroe enrolls nearly 7,000 students at its two campuses and through online learning. The diverse student population includes recent high school graduates as well as adult students who are returning to the educational forum. This diverse student population is made up of students from New York and abroad. About 30 percent of the New Rochelle campus is composed of international students. Many New Rochelle students are commuters, but a variety of housing facilities are available at this campus, including new modern dormitories.

Social activities are centered on the Student Activities Committee (SAC) and the athletic program. Monroes activities provide an opportunity for the development of the whole student within the college experience. There are a variety of clubs and activities for students, such as intramural sports, student publications, drama club, cheerleading, and cultural organizations. In addition, each academic major offers students an opportunity to participate in a professional organization. Intercollegiate sports include baseball, basketball, soccer, softball, track and field, and volleyball teams.

Location

Monroe is part of the New York City metropolitan area, with an urban campus in the Fordham section of the Bronx, which is easily accessible by car or public transportation. It is located in the vicinity of Yankee Stadium, the Bronx Zoo, and the New York Botanical Garden. A short train ride away is Manhattan, famous for Central Park, Broadway, Wall Street and the Financial District, many museums, the Statue of Liberty, the Empire State Building, the Staten Island Ferry, and South Street Seaport.

The suburban New Rochelle campus is located in the heart of the Sound Shore Corridor in bustling Westchester County. The campus offers convenient and spacious housing located in downtown New Rochelle and also serves commuter students. Within a short distance is the Long Island Sound, with abundant opportunities for recreation and leisure-time activities. Students can make use of a multitude of cultural facilities in New Rochelle and the surrounding communities, or they can be in New York City in just a few minutes.

Majors and Degrees

Monroe College confers the Bachelor of Business Administration (B.B.A.) degree in accounting, business management, general business, health services administration, hospitality management, and information technology and the Bachelor of Science (B.S.) degree in criminal justice and public health. Monroe also offers a practical nursing program as well as an associate degree program in registered nursing.

Academic Programs

Monroe Colleges programs immerse students into each academic major as well as emphasize the study of the liberal arts. Students entering a bachelors degree program are required to complete 120 credits. Students may apply for direct admission to the bachelor degree and forgo earning an associate degree. Monroe operates on a three-semester calendar. The fifteen-week semesters begin in early September, early January, and late April.

This calendar offers students the ability to earn their degree in less time than a traditional two-semester schedule. In addition, there are online learning opportunities through Internet courses.

Advanced placement is available for CLEP, transfer credit, prior learning experience (life experience evaluation), and proficiency examinations. Students can receive advanced-standing placement for up to 50 percent of the required credits for their chosen degree program.

Off-Campus Programs

Internships are conducted by the College in cooperation with businesses, industries, government agencies, and nonprofit organizations. They integrate on-campus study with off-campus work-study experience. The programs complement and reinforce the professional curriculum studied in the class, providing a broader comprehension of the context in which the student will be employed.

Academic Facilities

Both campuses have complete libraries with Online Computer Library Center (OCLC) access to other metropolitan New York and Westchester libraries. The Learning Resource Centers, which are available to all students from early in the morning to late at night, are equipped with computers and academic enrichment programs and videos. Staff tutors are available on a daily basis to reinforce classroom lectures in all subjects.

The Monroe College culinary arts program is taught in the new Culinary Arts Center on the New Rochelle campus. This facility, which may be the most state-of-the-art culinary instructional facility in metropolitan New York, provides students with four kitchen/labs.

Student Services provides close educational advisement as well as health clinics and primary-level psychological counseling. Students are also urged to take advantage of the Lifetime Career Resource Center. This program evaluates the academic performance and personal attributes of the student in order to identify skills and career goals so they may obtain a position in their field of study upon graduation. The Office of Career Advancement also assists students in obtaining part-time employment during their college careers in a co-op program. Workshops are provided on self-assessment, resume preparation, interview skills, and job search strategies.

Costs

Tuition for the 200809 academic year is $10,512 per year (nursing is $13,320 per year), and individual courses cost $1314 plus an administrative fee of $175 for up to 6 credits and $350 for more than 6 credits. Students choosing to reside in campus housing pay $5700 per year (double room), with a nonrefundable $150 application fee. Books cost approximately $300 per semester.

Financial Aid

Financial assistance is determined by the need of the student along with the availability of funds from federal, state, and institutional sources. More than 90 percent of the students receive some type of financial aid. The College takes into account the objective facts and the financial circumstances of the student and family, recognizing the differences of each family situation. Available assistance includes Federal Pell Grants, Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grants, Federal Stafford Student Loans (subsidized and unsubsidized), Federal PLUS loans, and the Federal Work-Study Program. For those students who have been New York State residents for one year or more, TAP may also be available. In addition, the College offers institutional aid (grant-in-aid), scholarships, loans, and employment to students, as well as funding for the purchase of some special equipment and services for disabled students.

Faculty

Monroe has more than 250 full-time faculty members and adjunct faculty members who are experts in their fields as well as excellent teachers. They work closely with their students, both inside and outside the classroom, to help them make the most of their talents, interests, and dreams. The undergraduate student-faculty ratio is 15:1.

Admission Requirements

Monroe College seeks serious individuals who demonstrate that they have the interest, ability, and potential to successfully complete appropriate requirements for the course of study selected. Graduation from an accredited high school, or the equivalent, and a personal interview are the basic requirements for admission to Monroe College. Submission of SAT scores is required if a student wants to be considered for a scholarship.
