The University

Monmouth University is a private, moderate-sized coeducational school committed to providing a learning environment that enables men and women to pursue their educational goals and realize their full potential for making significant contributions to their community and society. Small classes, which allow for individual attention and student-faculty dialogue, together with careful academic advising and career counseling, are hallmarks of a Monmouth education.

The student body is diverse, with a population of more than 4,700 undergraduates and 1,750 graduate students. Although most are from the Northeast, thirty states and thirty nations are represented, and there is a rich ethnic mix. Of the nearly 4,300 full-time undergraduate students enrolled, approximately 1,600 live on campus in traditional residence halls and garden apartment complexes. Both resident and commuting students have a wide variety of extracurricular activities to choose from: an active Student Government Association; the campus newspaper (Outlook), FM radio station (WMCX), and television station (Hawk TV); the yearbook (Shadows) and the literary magazine (Monmouth Review); the African American Student Union; a vast array of special-interest groups; theater; intramurals; and sororities and fraternities that engage in service work on behalf of the University and of the community. Many special events are planned each year, including art exhibits, concerts, lectures, sightseeing trips, and more.

The Universitys NCAA Division I intercollegiate athletics program includes nine mens teamsbaseball, basketball, cross-country, football (Division I-AA), golf, indoor track, outdoor track and field, soccer, and tennisand ten womens teamsbasketball, cross-country, field hockey, golf, indoor track, lacrosse, outdoor track and field, soccer, softball, and tennis. The gymnasium has an indoor pool, regulation-size basketball courts, and a training room and fitness center. Outdoor facilities include tennis courts, an all-weather track, and baseball, football, soccer, and softball fields.

Monmouth students are accorded many special services, including the full resources of the First-year Experience Office and the Life and Career Advising Center, which offers academic advising and individual personal and career counseling. Academic skills services, including the Math Center, the Writing Center, and the Peer Tutoring Office, provide personalized academic assistance. Employment counseling is available through the Placement Office.

In addition to its undergraduate degree programs, Monmouth offers numerous graduate degree programs in business administration, computer science, corporate and public communication, criminal justice, education, English, health-care management, history, liberal arts, mental health counseling, nursing, psychological counseling, public policy, social work, and software engineering. There are also graduate certificate programs in numerous areas of academic interest.

Location

The University is located in a residential area of an attractive community near the Atlantic Ocean, slightly more than a 1-hour drive from the metropolitan attractions of New York City and Philadelphia. The Universitys safe and secure 156-acre campus, considered to be one of the most beautiful in New Jersey, includes among its fifty-five buildings a harmonious blending of traditional and contemporary architectural styles.

The centerpiece building is Woodrow Wilson Hall, a National Historic Landmark that houses administrative offices and humanities classrooms. The University has completed the construction of the state-of-the-art Jules L. Plangere Jr. Center for Communication and Instructional Technology and commenced construction of a Multipurpose Activity Center in fall 2007. Restaurants, shops, and theaters are within easy reach, and several large shopping malls and the PNC Bank Arts Center (an entertainment hub) are only a few miles away.

Another advantage is proximity to many high-technology firms, financial institutions, and a thriving business-industrial sector. These provide not only employment possibilities for graduates but also the opportunity for undergraduates to gain practical experience through various internships and the cooperative education program conducted by the University.

Academic Programs

The curriculum is attuned to todays globally oriented, technological society while retaining a strong grounding in the liberal arts. Under the general education curriculum, students in all degree programs acquire a breadth of knowledge beyond their major fields of study, including an appreciation of world culture. Monmouth University also emphasizes writing, speaking, and other interpersonal skills that are critical to personal and professional success. Monmouth requires all students to fulfill a technology literacy component and an experiential education component that is a real-world experience related to the students academic major.

Monmouth University believes that in addition to providing sound preparation for successful careers, a major goal of higher education is to help students develop values. These include a keen sense of citizenship and social responsibility and the leadership qualities that equip graduates to contribute actively to the democratic society in which they live. Academic programs at Monmouth prepare students for life in an increasingly complex, multicultural world.

Extracurricular activities like cultural excursions to New York City are scheduled to reinforce the themes of the program.

Cooperative education is available to students, enabling them to gain practical experience in jobs related to their majors while completing their studies. All education majors are required to complete a semester of student teaching. The University also participates in the Washington Center, which is a partnership through which students may earn credit for experiential learning gained through internships and symposia in the nations capital.
