The University
Marymount University is a comprehensive, coeducational Catholic university. Located just 6 miles from the nations capital, it serves a diverse student body of approximately 2,200 undergraduates and 1,400 graduate students, who represent forty-five states and seventy countries. The University offers a wide range of majors and graduate degree programs through the Schools of Arts and Sciences, Business Administration, Education and Human Services, and Health Professions. Marymount is accredited by the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools.
The University takes full advantage of the resources in and around Washington,D.C. Government, business, and professional leaders are frequent visitors to the campus, enriching the learning experience. In addition, many students have internships with federal agencies, international businesses, and technology companies. The State Department, Smithsonian museums, and Congressional offices are popular internship sites. The blending of academics with hands-on, practical experience serves as a cornerstone of a well-rounded Marymount education. The University emphasizes excellence in teaching, attention to the individual, and values and ethics across the curriculum.
Students enjoy NCAA Division III sports, an active student government, a strong campus ministry group, more than thirty clubs, and a wide range of service opportunities. The Activities Programming Board plans activities both on and off campus, including comedy nights, concerts, movies, and theater evenings in D.C. It also gets tickets to local sporting events and schedules outings to ski and beach destinations.
The Lee Center serves as the hub of campus life. The center has a 1,000-seat sports arena, caf, bookstore, pool, recreational gym, fitness center, dance studio, meeting rooms, and lounges.
Living on campus is an important aspect of college life. Students who are under 21 and whose families do not live within commuting distance are required to live on campus for the first two years. Four residence halls house approximately 670 students. The rooms are wired with fiber-optic cable for Internet, phone, and cable TV access. The campus also has wireless-access areas.
Location
With Marymounts proximity to the nations capital, students enjoy the cultural and educational advantages of Washington, D.C. Museums, galleries, theaters, the Capitol, the Library of Congress, and the National Archives are all easily accessible. Marymount shuttle buses provide service to the Metro system. Union Station and Reagan National Airport are also within easy reach. The resources of Washington, whether for research, recreation, or internships, are right next door, while students enjoy the benefits of a suburban, 21-acre campus.
Majors and Degrees
The University awards the undergraduate degrees of Bachelor of Arts (B.A.), Bachelor of Business Administration (B.B.A.), Bachelor of Science (B.S.), and Bachelor of Science in Nursing (B.S.N.).
The Bachelor of Arts degree may be earned in art, communications, criminal justice, economics in society, English, fashion design, fashion merchandising, graphic design, history, interior design, liberal studies, philosophy, politics, psychology, sociology, and theology and religious studies. A Bachelor of Science degree may be earned in biology, criminal justice/forensic science, health sciences, information technology, and mathematics. Bachelor of Business Administration specialties include accounting, business law and paralegal studies, finance, general business, international business, management, and marketing. A Bachelor of Science program is offered in nursing.
Education licensure programs in the areas of elementary education (pre-K6), secondary education (712), English as a second language, learning disabilities, and art education (K12) are available to degree-seeking undergraduates who complete course work for education programs in addition to the courses required for the major discipline.
Marymount also offers preprofessional programs for law, medicine, and physical therapy.
Academic Programs
Marymount is dedicated to educating the whole personto helping students develop every aspect of their potential. The college years are years of transformation. They are a time to explore interests and to grow in knowledge and understanding. Marymount is committed to preparing students intellectually and morally for the tasks ahead, enabling them to achieve success and make a positive impact on the world.
Marymount students study a liberal arts core curriculum and the required elements of their chosen disciplines. Requirements for earning a degree include a cumulative GPA of 2.0 or better and a minimum of 36credits as a student at Marymount. The total number of credits required varies by program. Marymount operates on a semester system. Small classes and personal attention help ensure student success and a strong sense of community. An honor system guides academic and social conduct. The cultural and educational resources of the nations capital add to the curriculum through off-campus activities.
Marymounts honors program is for students who are seeking significant challenges and rewards. New, current, and transfer students of all disciplines may apply. The honors program experience culminates in the completion and defense of an honors thesis. Admission is competitive and limited to 20 new students each year. Students in the honors program receive substantial scholarship support, priority registration, special courses and opportunities, one-on-one faculty mentoring, direct involvement with program governance, travel support for professional conferences, and recognition at graduation and on the diploma and transcripts.
Off-Campus Programs
Undergraduate degrees require completion of an internship in the chosen field, in addition to all necessary course work in the major and liberal arts core courses. Marymount students intern regularly in Congressional offices, the State Department, Smithsonian museums, technology and biotechnology companies, media organizations, and international businesses, just to name a few of the choices available. For many students, internships lead to full-time employment after graduation.
Through the Universitys study-abroad program, Marymount offers semester-long programs in Africa, Australia, Austria, Central and South America, China, England, France, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Spain, and other locations.
Academic Facilities
The Main Campus has classrooms, computer labs and wireless-access areas, science labs, seminar rooms, language labs, nursing auto-tutorials, and studios for fine and graphic arts, fashion design, and interior design. The Emerson G. Reinsch Library is also located on the Main Campus. It houses more than 194,000 volumes and over 950 journals, with access to more than 10,000 journals through electronic resources and over seventy online information resources. Students have access to member libraries of the Washington Research Library Consortium and the Consortium for Continuing Higher Education in Northern Virginia.
The Learning Resource Center (LRC), located in the Reinsch complex, is a year-round academic counseling and learning center designed to support and enhance Marymount's instructional programs. Staffed by full-time learning specialists and by graduate and undergraduate peer tutors, the LRC provides tutoring assistance in writing, science, mathematics, and study skills for a broad range of courses. The Barry Art Gallery, also located in the Reinsch Library building, features a variety of exhibitions throughout the year.
The Ballston Center, an eight-story building just minutes from the Main Campus by free shuttle bus, also houses classrooms, seminar rooms, and computer labs and wireless-access areas as well as physical therapy labs, the Truland Auditorium, the Electronic Learning Center, and the recently opened Verizon Information Security Lab. The lab provides students with hands-on experience to prepare them for current and future cybersecurity challenges.
Marymounts recently opened Reston Center serves an adult learner population and offers graduate programs in business and education as well as two undergraduate options. The Bachelor of Business Administration is offered for returning students who have earned significant college business credits and who now wish to complete their degree. An online nursing program is also facilitated through the Reston Center for registered nurses who wish to earn the Bachelor of Science in Nursing.
Costs
The undergraduate tuition for 200708 was $20,190 per academic year. Room and board for 200708 were $8705 per academic year for double occupancy; there was an additional fee of $827.50 per semester for single occupancy.
Financial Aid
Marymount has an extensive scholarship and grant program and participates in all federal and state aid programs. To be considered for aid, students must file the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) with the College Scholarship Service. In fall 2007, 77percent of full-time, degree-seeking undergraduate students received financial aid. The financial aid includes scholarships, grants, loans, work-study awards, and on-campus employment.
Faculty
At Marymount, faculty members are committed to the success of each student. They make themselves readily available to discuss course work or career plans or to simply chat. The University has 143 full-time faculty members and a number of highly qualified adjunct faculty members. In addition, business and professional leaders often visit as lecturers. The undergraduate student-faculty ratio is 13:1. Marymount classes are small, so students and professors really get to know each other.
Student Government
The student government acts as the official liaison between students, faculty members, and the administration. It may make policy recommendations related to student issues. The Activities Programming Board plans and implements a variety of student events.
Admission Requirements
The Admissions team reviews the strength of an applicants academic record, national test scores, breadth of academic preparation, and letters of recommendation. Applicants to the freshman class are considered if a students high school grade point average in academic courses is 2.5 or better on a 4.0 scale, the combined SAT score is within 100 points of the national average or better, and the students academic preparation, recommendations, and character indicate that he or she is qualified to undertake Marymount programs. It is recommended that students have at least 4years of English; 3years of a foreign language, mathematics, and the social sciences; and 2years of science.
A campus interview is not required but is strongly recommended. It gives students a chance to see if Marymount would be a good fit. The University holds Campus Visit Days in the fall and spring. Visitors are welcome at any time, and appointments with Admissions staff members may be made in advance.
