In-Depth Description
Manhattanville College

The College

On its 100-acre campus 30 minutes north of New York City, Manhattanville College has created a small global village. The private coeducational college founded in 1841 draws its 1,600 students from seventy-six different countries and forty states. This richly diverse community embodies the Colleges mission: to educate ethically and socially responsible leaders for the global community.

Manhattanvilles proximity to New York City creates a constant flow of opportunity that brings learning to life. Many students choose to spend a semester abroad living, interning, and studying in the city. Manhattanville students know how to have fun, but they also have a sense of purpose. The Colleges social conscience is informed by a commitment to serving the communitywhether it is defined as the surrounding geographic area, where undergraduates logged 23,000 hours of service in a year, or as the global community. Manhattanville students actively seek opportunities to serve humanitarian causes in the developing world.

Manhattanvilles global perspective is enriched by its role as a Non-Government Organization of the United Nations. Select students have an opportunity to intern at the UN and to study with an ambassador on Manhattanvilles faculty. In addition, the College offers a Meet the Ambassadors Series on campus, where students attend lectures by leading ambassadors, followed by dinner at the home of the Colleges president.

Location

Manhattanvilles campus lies in the heart of Westchester County, bordered on the east by Long Island Sound and on the west by the Hudson River. From the roof of the castle that serves as the campus main hall, the skyline of Manhattan is clearly visible. This proximity to the city that calls itself the Capital of the World is one of Manhattanvilles many assets. The College provides transportation to the city on weekends and to Manhattan-bound commuter trains during the week so students can take advantage of all New York City has to offer.

Academic Programs

Manhattanville College offers full-time, part-time, and accelerated opportunities for study as well as dual-degree programs. The Manhattanville curriculum nurtures intellectual curiosity and independent thinking. Students and professors form close collaborative relationships beginning with the Preceptorial, an interdisciplinary survey of the liberal arts that is required of all freshmen.

The core of the Manhattanville curriculum is the Portfolio System, which provides for a level of flexibility that is unusual in traditional liberal arts education. Under the guidance of a faculty adviser, the student maps an academic and cocurricular program, establishing a major and minor from different branches of the liberal arts. The student may begin studies in the chosen field as early as the freshman year. Over the course of four years of study, the student assembles a portfolio consisting of study plans, evidence of academic proficiency in written critical analysis and qualitative research, annual evaluations, transcripts, and examples of the students best work. A College-wide review board evaluates the portfolio.

A special option for B.A. candidates is the self-designed major. If a students interests direct them beyond existing departmental majors, they may propose a program of study to the Board of Academic Standards. Manhattanville students also have the opportunity to earn academic credit for internships in New York City.

Manhattanville College offers college credit for A-level exams, International Baccalaureates, and Advanced Placement examinations.

Off-Campus Programs

Students in large measure shape the quality of life on the Manhattanville campus. Elected representatives of the student body run the student government, which serves as a principal means of communication among the administration, faculty members, and students. Its board of directors is responsible for formulating policy on student life and for implementing this policy through various committees. Student government members also serve on the Colleges policymaking and ad hoc committees.

Admission Requirements

Manhattanville College admits men and women as candidates for undergraduate degrees if their academic records indicate a competence to engage in a challenging liberal arts curriculum. Admission to the College is selective, and the most important consideration is the students secondary school performance. When weighing this aspect,7 the admissions committee evaluates the quality of the school, the strength of the students program, and success in those studies. Next, the committee considers the various recommendations that are submitted on behalf of the student, along with scores on required standardized tests and the students personal statement. The SAT or the ACT is required. A campus interview is strongly recommended. Students who plan to specialize in music or musical theater should come to Manhattanville for an audition or should secure permission to submit a tape. Students who plan to apply for the B.F.A. degree program should present portfolios to the art department for evaluation. The portfolios are not required for admission to the College. Students who plan to study dance and theater may audition for scholarships.
