The College

Lynchburg College is a fully accredited, coeducational, nonsectarian liberal arts college related to the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ). It offers undergraduate programs in the liberal arts, sciences, and professional disciplines (including business, communications, education, and nursing) and graduate programs in business, education, and English. The College is committed to the principle that every individual is of infinite worth, and it endeavors to provide a program of liberal education consistent with the needs of contemporary society. It draws its undergraduate student body of approximately 2,100 men and women from thirty-one states and six countries. The College community is largely residential, with approximately 87 percent of the full-time undergraduate student body living on campus. Approximately 45 percent of the undergraduates are from out of state.

The 214-acre campus has long been considered one of the most beautiful in the South. Thirty-seven buildings of mostly Georgian Colonial design have the majestic Blue Ridge Mountains as a backdrop. The Claytor Nature Student Center, a 470-acre farm in nearby Bedford County, is utilized for environmental and educational purposes as a learning laboratory to promote the property as a model of environmental management in cooperation with various organizations locally and nationally. This year, the College added an astronomical observatory to the grounds, including a 20-inch telescope that will be put to use by students and faculty members.

A wide variety of activities are available in the Lynchburg College community: service and honor organizations, including the national Bonnor Leader Program; more than seventy clubs and organizations; five fraternities; and five sororities as well as opportunities to participate in dramatic productions, student publications, religious activities, and musical performances. New Horizons provides adventure-based leadership and team-building opportunities for individuals and groups. Community service is a distinguishing feature of the Lynchburg College students, who annually contribute more than 30,000 volunteer hours to the community through such projects as Habitat for Humanity, Camp Jaycees, Special Olympics, and other programs.

The varsity athletic program is diverse and includes baseball, basketball, cheerleading, cross-country, equestrian sports, golf, indoor and outdoor track and field, lacrosse, soccer, and tennis for men and basketball, cheerleading, cross-country, equestrian sports, field hockey, lacrosse, soccer, softball, tennis, track, and volleyball for women. The College participates in NCAA Division III and is a charter member of the Old Dominion Athletic Conference, which includes Bridgewater, Eastern Mennonite, Emory & Henry, Guilford, Hampden-Sydney, Hollins, Lynchburg, Randolph-Macon, Randolph, Roanoke, Sweet Briar, Virginia Wesleyan, and Washington and Lee. In addition, the College supports several club sports, including mens lacrosse, womens soccer, cycling, skiing and snowboarding, shotokan karate, and a ballroom dance. An intramural program exists for interested men and women as well. In 2001 and 2002, the College won the Commissioners Cup for having the best athletic program in its conference. The Turner Athletic Facility includes state-of-the-art exercise and fitness areas, a dance studio, and one of the top exercise physiology labs in Virginia. The gymnasium seats 1,500.

The Colleges Shellenberger Field has been newly renovated to include artificial turf, a new stadium, a resurfaced track, and lights for night use. Also included are Moon Field upgradesa permanent softball outfield fence and new areas for the track and field events of javelin, hammer, shot put, and discus.These improvements allow students to enjoy many more recreational opportunities in varsity, intramural, and club sports and general activities.

Location

Lynchburg College is located in central Virginia, 100 miles from Richmond, 180 miles southwest of Washington, D.C., and 50 miles east of Roanoke. Greater Lynchburg is a growing business and industrial center with a population of more than 240,000. The city is noted for its climate, culture, and historic landmarks. It is within an easy drive of the Blue Ridge Mountains, where many popular lakes and resorts are located. Air, bus, and railroad transportation place Lynchburg within easy reach of any urban center.

Majors and Degrees

Lynchburg College offers the Bachelor of Arts in the following fields: accounting, art (graphic design or studio art), business administration, communication studies (journalism or speech communication), economics (financial or general), English (literature or writing), French, history, international relations, management, marketing, music, philosophy, political science, religious studies, sociology (criminology or general), Spanish, sports management, and theater. The degree of Bachelor of Science is offered in the following fields: applied physical science, athletic training, biology, biomedical science, chemistry (professional or technical), computer science, environmental science, exercise physiology, health and movement science, health promotion, human development and learning (elementary education or special education), mathematics, nursing, physics, and psychology.

A candidate for a B.A. degree may elect to take a joint major in foreign languagebusiness management, philosophypolitical science, philosophyreligious studies, psychologyspecial education, religious studiessociology, or religious studies and another major. Double majors and minors may also be taken in many areas of study. Advanced undergraduates may also take some graduate courses.

Preprofessional and professional courses are available for students who want preparation for careers in art therapy, dentistry, forestry and wildlife management, law, library science, medicine, ministry and ministry-related occupations, museum studies, occupational therapy, optometry, pharmacy, physical therapy, and veterinary medicine.

Academic Programs

To be eligible for a degree, a student must complete at least 124 semester hours of college-level academic work. In addition, a degree candidate must have a grade point average of at least 2.0 on all work undertaken, plus an average of at least 2.0 on all work undertaken in the major field.

The curriculum at Lynchburg College is divided into two general areas; some additional hours are available for students to explore course work in free elective areas of their choice. The first of the two areas of study consists of General Education Requirements (GERs) selected from the broad disciplines of world literature, fine arts, philosophy, religious studies, mathematics, history, social science, laboratory science, foreign languages, and health and movement science. All students are exposed to each of these academic areas. The second of the two general areas is the major. The College offers thirty-six majors, ranging from education and business to the sciences and the humanities, as well as thirteen preprofessional programs. This curriculum offers students breadth (GERs) as well as depth (the major). Students may devote their free elective hours to one of forty-three minor programs to further enhance their education.

Outstanding students may be selected to participate in the Colleges Westover Honors Program, the purpose of which is to attract, stimulate, challenge, and fulfill academically gifted students. The program offers a challenging curriculum that promotes intellectual curiosity and independent thinking and places strong emphasis on creative problem solving.

The College operates on an early semester calendar. The first semester begins in late August and ends before Christmas, and the second semester runs from mid-January to early May. An optional three-week winter term is also offered. An Advanced Placement Scholars Program permits some students to enter with advanced standing, credit, or both. Credit is also awarded on the basis of satisfactory scores on the CLEP subject exams. Early admission is available for the talented student. Eligible students who want to accelerate their program may meet degree requirements in three years.

Lynchburg offers entry-level computer courses to all students, and students are strongly encouraged to become computer literate. New students may bring a computer of their own or utilize one of the many available on campus. All students are assigned an e-mail account and have access to the Internet. In addition, all students are allowed to develop their own home pages on the World Wide Web, which they have access to through the computer resources provided by the College. All residence hall rooms are wired for network access and the Intranet, which serves the College community. Wireless Internet access is available in most areas of the campus.

Off-Campus Programs

Various agency and intercollegiate exchange programs are available for interested students. Language students may engage in foreign-study programs and are encouraged to do so. In addition, any student who wishes to study abroad may do so as part of the Colleges study-abroad program.

Internships, organized through the Academic and Career Services Office, are available locally, nationally, and internationally. More than 1,000 internships are already established, and new sites are developed each year. Specific guidelines for these programs are set forth by each department. In addition, Lynchburg College, Randolph College, and Sweet Briar College, as members of the Tri-College Consortium of Virginia, maintain cooperative relationships for the sharing of facilities and offerings. Students at each of the colleges have access to the libraries of the other two and may enroll in a course on either of the other campuses without payment of additional tuition.

Academic Facilities

The Hobbs Science Center provides an outstanding learning environment for students pursuing studies in biology, chemistry, physics, biomedical sciences, environmental science, psychology, mathematics, and computer science. In addition to state-of-the-art research labs, including a cadaver lab, students studying environmental science can utilize the online weather station, GIS and remote sensing software, and digitizer. This modern facility is also used during the summer by the Virginia Governors School for Math and Science to provide programming for selected high school students. Extending over 470 acres, the Claytor Nature Study Center is a hands-on learning environment with natural woodlands, grasslands, two lakes, wetlands, and a mile-long stretch of the Big Otter River, and an 8,000-square-foot education/research facility.

Schewel Hall is Lynchburg Colleges state-of-the-art, $12-million classroom and laboratory facility, which houses the School of Business and Economics, the Communication Studies program, foreign languages, performing arts, and multiple venues for students to congregate and study. This 67,000-square-foot facility includes technology-based classrooms, computer laboratories, and specialized teaching-learning settings, including a model stock exchange room, a digital darkroom, and a multimedia development center with television and recording studios.

The Daura Art Gallery is the major repository of more than 1,000 works of the Catalan-American artist, Pierre Daura. The expansion of this facility makes the Daura Gallery the largest visual art exhibit center in the city of Lynchburg. Each year, it is the site for the Senior Art Show in which chosen student works are exhibited.

Costs

For resident students who enter in the 200708 session, total charges are $33,785; this includes $26,360 for tuition, $6570 for room and board, and $855 for student fees.

Financial Aid

Lynchburg College administers a financial aid program of more than $27 million. These resources are awarded to students as a result of meritorious achievement and/or demonstrated need. Lynchburg College offers academic and achievement scholarships that range from $3000 to $12,000 and are based on performance and accomplishments at the high school or community college level. These awards are renewable each year until the student graduates, as long as the recipient maintains a qualifying minimum academic average each year. Students are identified to receive these scholarships through the admission application; no separate application is necessary. Free early aid estimates are available for students. More than 95 percent of last years entering class received academic and/or need-based financial aid. The average amount of aid received was $16,000.

To determine eligibility for need-based financial aid, the student should complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), which may be obtained at most high schools and at Lynchburg College. The FAFSA results determine the students eligibility for federally funded grants and loans and other support such as work-study opportunities. In addition, students from Virginia are eligible to apply for the Virginia Tuition Assistance grant.

Faculty

The Lynchburg College faculty has 135 full-time members, 80 percent of whom hold the doctorate or terminal degree in their field. The student-faculty ratio is 12:1. While many faculty members are involved in research projects, it is a College policy that the facultys top priorities must be in the classroom.

Student Government

The student government of Lynchburg College is regulated by agreements determined by the students, faculty, and administration. It is felt that the College should not be run by the faculty alone, nor by students alone, but through the cooperative interest of all. Campus government is vested in the Student Government Association, the Judicial Boards, the Campus Life Policies Committee, and the Office of the Dean of Student Development. The Student Government Association is also responsible for the Academic Honor Code, a prominent part of campus life.

Admission Requirements

A candidate for admission to Lynchburg College should be a graduate of an approved secondary school with a minimum of 16 academic units or the equivalent, as shown by examination. It is required that the academic work include major emphases in the areas of English, foreign language, social science, natural sciences, and mathematics. An applicant must demonstrate above-average academic ability in all areas of study, as admission is competitive. In support of the record, a student must present satisfactory scores on the SAT (critical reading and math scores are used to determine admission decisions and merit scholarship awards) or ACT. It is recommended that all students have a personal interview and visit the campus beginning the spring semester of their junior year or during their senior year. Enrollment Office hours during the academic year are 9to 5 Monday through Friday and 9 to noon on Saturday during the academic year.
